From the Dean
 | | Fern Jennings |
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
I am mindful as I write this of our Jewish friends and colleagues who are in the midst of the Days of Awe. At First Unitarian we acknowledged the Jewish High Holy Days this past Sunday by singing Jewish music. Our cantor soloist wrote that the Book of Life that is opened on Rosh Hashanah is closed on Yom Kippur signifying absolution by God for wrongs committed in the previous year. We could all of us, Christian, Jews, Unitarians, or "other" use a time to reflect on our past behavior and amend as needed.
In AGO matters, we have received notice by Linda Gardner of her resignation as Newsletter and Calendar Editor for the Chapter. Linda has served in this position for many years, producing first a monthly newsletter and then, when we moved to our on-line weekly update format, a quarterly newsletter for those who do not have e-mail access. She also has updated the Google calendar on our website. Thank you, Linda for your service to the AGO!
For the time being, I will edit the weekly update with content added by Sub-dean Barbara MacGregor and web-master, Tim Robson. We welcome your submissions of concert previews, reviews, news about members, or links to items of interest to members. Please continue to send your update items to newsletter@agocleveland.org. Continue to use the concert submission form on the web-site for your calendar entries.
We begin two features with this update. One is Featured Concerts. These will generally be organ or choral concerts by members or out-of-town artists and will include extra detail and sometimes pictures. We invite your feature article for this section. The other is Today in Classical Music History with an item of interest to organists.
Please note below our upcoming recital with Daryl Robinson and pertinent information about the November John Ferguson hymn sing. Avail yourself of the many concert possibilities for the upcoming week. When you receive this I will be on my way to the Eastman School of Music for the EROI/Bach Society "Bach and the Organ" Symposium and a rare fall Sunday off from my church.
Best to you,
Fern

Peter Williams: The King of InstrumentsNew book from the Organ Historical Society NEW! The organ is the largest instrument with the largest repertory and the greatest influence on Western music's unique evolution. But what is its origin? Who first made it, when, where, how? Why was it introduced in churches? What gradually led to the vast world of organ music? Is the keyboard itself not one of the West's greatest inventions? This newly-revised book by Peter Williams reviews what is known and speculated about this fascinating topic, drawing on a large number of interdisciplinary sources to suggest some answers and underlines the significance (in the words of an early scribe) of the "instrument of instruments." Today in Musical History
 | | William Billings |
On this date William Billings died in Boston in 1800. Known as the "Singing Master of Boston", Billings is considered the father of American choral music. He is best known for the hymn Chester. You can download the music free from the Choral Public Domain Library. This might be useful to your choir for election season. Here is link to a group singing Chester in traditional shape note style. Another well-known piece by Billings is David's Lamentation. Here is a link to a You-Tube performance. For a beautiful rendition of the same text by a contemporary composer listen to Eric Whitacre's composition When David Wept. |
