From the Dean
 | | Fern Jennings |
Friends, This past Sunday was Ingathering Sunday at my church. You may have a similar type of Homecoming, Rally Sunday or other term for the Sunday when traditionally everyone gets back from vacation, school starts and regular church activities begin. Ours was a festive affair. We had a Brass Quintet playing music on our portico while everyone gathered on the lawn and then processed into the Sanctuary. We had a story for all ages and homily by our new Religious Education Director as well as our Pastor. We taught the congregation a new up tempo hymn, and my new tenor sang a rousing Gospel solo backed up by the choir. There was so much energy in the room it gave me chills. I was thinking this morning as I was practicing in that same room, now empty, of how some of that energy seemed to come from the presence of new people. New leaders, but also guests. And then I thought that the energy came from each person present. There was also the remembered energy of people missing- Ron Bishop, who usually plays Tuba, but is ill, another member of the congregation, also ill. There was a little empty space there where they should have been. The same is true for an organization such as ours- the AGO. The energy of the organization comes from the presence or absence of each of us. Your name in the Yearbook, your presence or absence at events. When we lose or gain members the force of the group changes in some way. Leadership changes. People move. Some are ill. Others have died. New people join. Our opening Social event- this Sunday's picnic- is a time to gauge the energy of the organization. The dynamic of the group will change if you are not there. Truly your presence is important! Please come! I look forward to seeing you on Sunday! Fern
