From the Dean
 | | Fern Jennings |
Friends, This week we return to our weekly format for this update. We will keep you informed of Chapter events, news and items of interest in the organ world. While I may not have something to say every week, I plan to use this column to educate, enlighten, and pontificate on pertinent topics. My thoughts may include musings on music education, philosophy, professional concerns or even a little music history. They will be short, that is for certain. This is a format for member submissions as well. If you have an item of interest or something you want to say about our profession or music in general send it to newsletter editor Linda Gardner. Just remember to keep your article short. And don't forget to enter your concerts on our on-line calendar at agocleveland.org. While you are there check out the other information we have available to you. All the best, Fern

REGARDING THE AGO GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE
Message to Ohio AGO Deans and others:
I received a message today from Marlene Hallstrom, the director of the AGO Committee on Career Development and Support. This committee had their annual meeting earlier this week and it was decided that it would be much better to keep the "most recent" AGO Grievance Procedure in place until at alternate procedure is worked out and introduced in 2013. So that official announcement that the AGO would accept no more grievance applications after August 1st, is now to be struck from the record.
As of today the official word is that the AGO will still accept new Grievance applications until the new procedures are in place.
The ban on new grievance cases is lifted and please stand by for the announcement about the new procedure that will be in place in the near future. But still keep in mind that there is no expected time frame at this time to have the new procedure in place.
Thanks to all of you for all the great things that you have done and will continue to do for the AGO in Ohio, and also for all of those great things that you will do for the AGO in the future.
If you have any questions about the current grievance procedure, please feel free to ask and I'll be happy to find the answers for you.
Sincerely,
David Lamb
AGO Councillor for Region V - Great Lakes Region

NEWS ABOUT MEMBERS AND OTHER INFORMATION
EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER DON SHULTZABERGER suffered a mild stroke at his summer home in Pennsylvania. Apparently, he could not put on his socks and his speech was slurred. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital and diagnosed, then moved to a larger hospital. He was transferred to Lakewood Hospital yesterday (Thursday, August 23) and is in the rehab unit. I visited with him for just a short while yesterday afternoon and was most pleased to hear him speak. He had a mere trace of a slur, and I think that will disappear. He was beginning to get some sensation in his left hand and could move slightly his pinkie and index finger. All signs are good there. He is, however, unable to swallow yet, so is on a feeding tube. The docs feel he will make a very good recovery. Prayers would be in order.
--Peg Limkemann (as of September 5, 2012)
WANTED: Bottom 12 pipes of an 8' Open Diapason, Principal, Montre or whatever.
This will be used in the choir division, so smaller scale is better. Maybe a bigger string or gemshorn would work. Contact Joe Metzinger at gesumusic123@aol.com
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, was the 100th birthday of composer John Cage (died in 1992)- one of his organ works is still being played - LITERALLY since 2001 and will not end for another 633 years! It takes over six centuries to play the piece called "As Slow as Possible." Find out more.
ORGANIST CAMERON CARPENTER played two recitals the end of last week at the BBC Proms concerts in London's Royal Albert Hall. The programs were in the Mr. Carpenter's usual idiosyncratic manner. Among the publicity was a review in The Telegraph.

September Spectacular at St. Sebastian
This year's September Spectacular at St. Sebastian is not your usual Akron fundraising
fare. The Napa-themed event includes incredible live auction items such as two tickets to the Oscar de la Renta runway show at New York Fashion Week 2013, four tickets to the Indy 500 with Gasoline Alley privileges, a dream trip for four to Napa Valley that includes a stay in a romantic villa, Thirsty Dog private evening for twelve, and much more! Exciting silent auction items include wine-themed options such as an overnight package at Gervasi Vineyards with a cooking class and wine tasting, a hot air balloon ride, prime OSU tickets and many products and services from Akron-area companies, events and attractions. Guests will enjoy a gourmet sit-down dinner catered by parishioner Rafe Vaccaro of Vaccaro's Trattoria and dessert donated by West Point Market. This year, the September Spectacular committee is proud to honor its founders, Trisha Gerak, Kathleen Holaday, Michelle Huber and Allie Petit.
