Friends,

I hope you are getting some time off this summer. I generally start out the summer with plans to learn new music in a disciplined way. Of course this usually only lasts a week or so and then... But that is what summer is for- a time to relax and recharge.

10 things to do when it is too hot to go out:

1. Read through some new music.

2. Learn a new skill like playing figured bass.

3. Catch up on your reading.

4. Nothing.

5. Read old "The American Organist" issues.

6. Listen to some music in style you don't usually don't hear.

7. Follow a You-tube thread where it leads you. Start with an organ piece or a famous organ.

8. Watch some movies you missed.  I recommend "The Artist".

9. Plan what you will bring to the September AGO picnic.

10. If you have not renewed your AGO membership, send a check today!

Stay cool!

Fern

From the Registrar

Last year we had 179 members.  As of July 8, 2012, one hundred forty of last year's members have renewed.  If you haven't sent in your renewal form and check, please do so immediately to ensure that you are listed in the yearbook directory and to make sure that your American Organist magazine subscription isn't interrupted.  Let me know if you need another copy of your membership renewal form.

Thanks,

EROI Festival 2012

September 27-30
Eastman School of Music
Bach and the Organ"
Peter Williams, keynote speaker
Presented in conjunction with the biennial meeting of the American Bach Society

Made possible with support from the Westfield Center and the American Bach Society.

This year's festival, a collaboration between the American Bach Society, Eastman Rochester Organ Initiative, and the Westfield Center, will explore many aspects of Johann Sebastian Bach's connection to the organ. The program includes exciting new scholarship by internationally recognized Bach scholars on topics ranging from the organ's role in eighteenth century vocal instrumental music, manuscript studies, and the instrument in eighteenth century context and society, among others. Performances will feature solo organ works and cantatas by Bach and his circle on the Craighead-Saunders Organ and Hook & Hastings Organ Opus 1573 at Christ Church, the Italian Baroque Organ at the Memorial Art Gallery, the Fritts Organ at Sacred Heart Cathedral, and the pedal clavichord. Join us for what promises to be a synergetic meeting of scholars, performers, and instrument builders.

Transylvanian organs

Transylvanian Organ 3
My husband Wayne and I went in April on a pilgrimage to visit Unitarian Churches in Transylvania. We were guests of the minister in our partner church in a remote village in the West Carpathians. We visited many Unitarian churches in the area. They all have small four to six rank pipe organs built in the mid-1800s by Austrian or Hungarian builders. They have a single manual and in some cases a pedal board. They are in various states of disrepair often with only one stop that is usable. They are used every Sunday though and are still have a foot powered bellows. The congregations are too poor to repair or replace them so they are mostly in original condition. Transylvanian Organ 1

Here are some pictures.

2012 Smith Carillon Concert Series

July 12, 19, 26, Aug. 2, all at 7 p.m.,Penn State Erie, The Behrend College
Smith Carillon - Penn State Erie

ERIE, Pa. - June 4, 2012 - Summer's biggest concerts don't require multiple stages or three-day passes, only the world's largest musical instrument-the carillon.

The 48 bells of the Floyd and Juanita Smith Carillon at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, sit atop an 80-foot brick tower adjacent to the Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel. Weighing between 15 and 1,344 pounds each, the bells produce a massive sound that rolls weightlessly over the college and its surrounding hillside.

To introduce the community to the remarkable majesty of the instrument, Penn State Behrend will host four carillon performances this summer. All begin at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Free hot dogs and snacks will be served.

This summer's Smith Carillon Concert Series performers will be:

Thursday, July 12
Trevor Workman
Carillonneur for the Bournville Village Trust in Birmingham, England

Thursday, July 19
Janet Tebbel
Carillonneur for the First United Methodist Church and the Miraculous Medal Shrine, both in Germantown, Pa.

Thursday, July 26
Auke de Boer and Adolph Rots
City Carillonneurs for Groningen, The Netherlands

Thursday, August 2
Koen Cosaert
Director of the Royal Carillon School Jef Denyn in Mechelen, Belgium

Seating for the Smith Carillon Concert Series is on the lawn of Smith Chapel; concertgoers are encouraged to bring their own chair or blanket. In the event of rain, seating will be available inside the chapel.

Carillon audiences cannot directly observe the carillonneur; he or she sits in a small room in the base of the tower and strikes a keyboard-like clavier with a loose fist to bring a clapper to each bell. Smith Carillon Concert Series performers can be seen via a live feed broadcast to a television located in either the lower-level room of the Smith Chapel or, weather permitting, on the chapel patio.

The Smith Carillon bells were cast by Meeks, Watson & Co., a bell founder located in Georgetown, Ohio, and are made from "bell metal," a bronze consisting of 80 percent copper and 20 percent tin. This alloy has been used for carillon bells since the 1600s. Penn State Behrend's instrument is considered a "concert carillon" because it covers four octaves, permitting performance of almost the entire canon of published carillon music.

The Smith Carillon Concert Series is made possible by a gift from Larry and Kathryn Smith. For additional information about the series, phone 814-898-6609.
