Dear AGOers,

The 2012-13 Cleveland Chapter Executive Committee met for their organizational meeting on June 6. At the meeting we appointed two members to unexpired executive committee terms. Margaret Matuska was appointed to the unexpired term ending in 2014 and Grant Wiswell was appointed to the unexpired term ending in 2013. We thank them for their willingness to join the Executive Committee.

The Board approved the programs for the next year as well as the budget. Our program year will begin with an Oktoberfest picnic at the home of Hildred and Ed Tornberg on Sunday, September 16 at 4pm. Brats and beer will be furnished. Save the date! Other program highlights include a recital with the NYACOP winner, a hymn festival with John Ferguson, a Church Music Workshop in March and a recital with up and coming artist Christopher Houlihan. Thanks to Sub-Dean Barabara MacGregor and her committee for their work on this year's program.

Registrar Chris Toth reports that about fifty members have not renewed yet. If this includes you, please send in your membership form and check. We need your support for the AGO, the organ and our profession. Grant Wiswell will be soliciting advertisements for our Yearbook. Please consider an ad in our membership book for your church, concert series, or business and call him if he doesn't call you. Advertising helps defray the cost of printing our yearbook and highlights your event or business to our 175 members.

We discussed a focus for the year at our meeting and the concensus was that we need to work on membership. We have had a slow attrition of membership from over 200 to about 175. A member recruitment/retainment program is needed. I am looking for enthusiastic, friendly members who would be willing to serve on a membership committee. National has published materials to get us started. If you are willing to get involved in this effort please give me a call. It is my belief that membership in the AGO, our professional organization for the promotion of the organ and organists, should be a lifelong commitment for any organist worth their salt.

Best to you "Salty" organists out there!
Fern

Smith Carillon Concert Series 2012

July 12, 19, 26, Aug. 2, all at 7 p.m.,Penn State Erie, The Behrend College

Smith Carillon - Penn State ErieERIE, Pa. - June 4, 2012 - Summer's biggest concerts don't require multiple stages or three-day passes, only the world's largest musical instrument-the carillon.

The 48 bells of the Floyd and Juanita Smith Carillon at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, sit atop an 80-foot brick tower adjacent to the Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel. Weighing between 15 and 1,344 pounds each, the bells produce a massive sound that rolls weightlessly over the college and its surrounding hillside.

To introduce the community to the remarkable majesty of the instrument, Penn State Behrend will host four carillon performances this summer. All begin at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Free hot dogs and snacks will be served.

This summer's Smith Carillon Concert Series performers will be:

Thursday, July 12
Trevor Workman
Carillonneur for the Bournville Village Trust in Birmingham, England

Thursday, July 19
Janet Tebbel
Carillonneur for the First United Methodist Church and the Miraculous Medal Shrine, both in Germantown, Pa.

Thursday, July 26
Auke de Boer and Adolph Rots
City Carillonneurs for Groningen, The Netherlands

Thursday, August 2
Koen Cosaert
Director of the Royal Carillon School Jef Denyn in Mechelen, Belgium

Seating for the Smith Carillon Concert Series is on the lawn of Smith Chapel; concertgoers are encouraged to bring their own chair or blanket. In the event of rain, seating will be available inside the chapel.

Carillon audiences cannot directly observe the carillonneur; he or she sits in a small room in the base of the tower and strikes a keyboard-like clavier with a loose fist to bring a clapper to each bell. Smith Carillon Concert Series performers can be seen via a live feed broadcast to a television located in either the lower-level room of the Smith Chapel or, weather permitting, on the chapel patio.

The Smith Carillon bells were cast by Meeks, Watson & Co., a bell founder located in Georgetown, Ohio, and are made from "bell metal," a bronze consisting of 80 percent copper and 20 percent tin. This alloy has been used for carillon bells since the 1600s. Penn State Behrend's instrument is considered a "concert carillon" because it covers four octaves, permitting performance of almost the entire canon of published carillon music.

The Smith Carillon Concert Series is made possible by a gift from Larry and Kathryn Smith. For additional information about the series, phone 814-898-6609.
