Why a Cleveland Organ Weekend? For decades now Cleveland has hosted the International Piano Competition. The Programming Committee thought it was time that the organ is promoted throughout Cleveland in a weekend of concerts and demonstrations on October 28, 29, and 30.

What can I do to promote this weekend? Tell your friends, your congregation members, and lovers of organ music about this big weekend. Go to the chapter website (www.agocleveland.org) and print off the posters and get them out in your community. For this weekend to be a success, it will take many to promote this event.

What can I do on Sunday, October 30 in my place of worship? Play a piece of organ music that shows-off your instrument. Hold a brief demonstration after worship for children/adults showing them what the organ can do. Let them tour the organ chambers, if possible. Go to the chapter website for a listing of hymns and anthems that can be used during worship celebrating the organ. Place a brief history of your organ in your bulletin and/or your monthly newsletter. Have brochures available about the AGO (contact me if you want brochures).

Can I financially contribute to this weekend? YES! No contribution is too small or too large. Send all donations to Treasurer David Powers, 2539 W Sprague Rd, Broadview Heights, 44147, made out to the Cleveland Chapter AGO, and please note Organ Weekend on the memo line.

If I have any more questions, whom do I contact? Contact me at dean@agocleveland.org or Sub-Dean, Clifford Hill at subdean@agocleveland.org, or Jonathan Moyer at jonathanwmoyer@gmail.com

Have a great week, Jim

About Jehan Alain
For many of us, the mention of Jehan Alain, brings to mind his organ compositions, particularly "Litanies", "Deuxieme Fantaisie", or the "Trois Danses". His compositions for piano, instruments, choir and voice are perhaps not so well known.

Alain was born in 1911 in the western suburbs of Paris and to a musical family. His father, Albert, was a composer, organist, and organ builder. His younger sister, Marie-Claire, became an organist as well as a champion of her brother's works.

Jehan enrolled in the Paris Conservatoire, studying with Marcel Dupre, Paul Dukas, and Jean Roger-Ducasse. He began to compose at the age of 18 and continued through the outbreak of World War II. His musical language was influenced by Claude Debussy and Olivier Messiaen. Alain's interest in the music, dance and philosophies of the Far East heavily influenced his music.

On Saturday, 1 October at Oberlin College, we have an opportunity to hear organ, instrumental, and vocal works of Jehan Alain and to attend the lectures of Dr. Aurélie Decourt, the daughter of Marie-Claire Alain. (Find out more about Jehan Alain, his life and music.)

Cleveland Organ Weekend poster is now available for download as a PDF from the chapter web site. Please help advertise this exciting weekend of organ music. The poster was designed to be printed on legal size paper. Natural and cream papers look quite rich with the color scheme, but white is also fine.   If you don't have legal paper at home, please print it at your church if possible.   If you print on letter size paper, please consider trimming the sides.   A supply of posters will be available at the October meeting in Oberlin or you may contact Don Jackson at donclef@aol.com.

William Porter, Organ Recital
World-Renowned Organist in Lorain
William Porter color
William Porter
Internationally-known organist William Porter will play a free recital at First Lutheran Church, 603 Washington Ave., Lorain on Sunday, September 25 at 3:00 p.m. Widely known as a performer and teacher in the United States and Europe and a professor at Eastman School of Music and McGill University, Mr. Porter is a leader among organists working toward recovery of an historical approach to musical performance, and has achieved international recognition for his skill in improvisation in a wide variety of styles.

Mr. Porter will be performing on John Brombaugh's Opus 4 at First Lutheran Church, 603 Washington Ave., Lorain, OH. This instrument, finished in 1970, is Brombaugh's first large instrument, and was a ground-breaking instrument for its re-employment of historic building principles such as flexible wind supply, hammered pipe metal, and unequal temperament. In 2011, Opus 4 received a Historic Organ Citation from the Organ Historical Society, recognizing it as "an instrument of exceptional historic merit." This organ is only the 9th in Ohio to receive such a citation, and is the 5th-youngest organ ever to receive one. A plaque acknowledging the citation will be formally presented at the concert.

This concert is free and open to the public. It is part of First Lutheran's FIRSTˇmusic concert series, whose goal comes from the church's vision statement: to "use our musical resources to enhance our experience of God and as a gift to the community." First Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America located in downtown Lorain, known for good music and social service.
