FROM THE DEAN

Dean Jim Riggs
The phone conversation ended with, "I have to go dial up a funeral."  What-dial up a funeral!  The voice on the other end told me that he had been recording into his MIDI many preludes/postludes. When it came time for a funeral he would take a magazine with him to the bench and push the midi button for the 15 minute prelude and then repeat the process for the postlude.  I was stunned.  That particular conversation ended 1.5 years ago and I have been pondering this thought for some time.

I do like what we are able to do with electronics these days--record ourselves and play it back to hear articulations, registrations, and tempos.  I must say I am still on the fence when it comes to using the midi playback device for an entire prelude or postlude.  Is this live music?  Are we being faithful to our profession when asked to play for services and use the playback feature
How do you use midi on your instrument?

Our chapter is filled with members who play on pipe organs and electronic organs. In this digital age I would welcome your comments and feedback on this issue.  Email me at dean@agocleveland.org or if you have joined the chapter Facebook page post a comment there.

All best, Jim
