With the heat of summer upon us, it is time to start selling coolant system services.  Customers need to know that antifreeze is the key to keeping their vehicle running cool in the dog days of summer, and a properly maintained system will keep them from encountering larger problems in the future. 

Today's long-life coolants are supposed to be good for five years or 150,000 miles.  After five or more years of service, the corrosion inhibitors usually are worn out and the coolant needs to be replaced.  Any time a vehicle is in for service, the PH of the antifreeze should be tested.  If the coolant does not meet the PH levels required by OEM specs, it should be replaced.  If the coolant is not replaced for preventive maintenance, corrosion can start to eat away the inside of the cooling system, attacking the radiator, heater core, water pump, engine and even rubber hoses.

Any customer that has an older model vehicle that has not had their antifreeze changed should be encouraged to properly maintain their vehicle and have a full flush performed.  When these flushes are performed, premixed coolant is easier to install and reduces the risk of coolant contamination by dissolved minerals or salt in tap water.
