Greetings!

In case you haven't noticed lately, we are living in a culture that is obsessed with the stars. No, I'm not referring to those celestial lights that come out at night and can only shine in the absence of light. But the stars that I'm referring to are the ones that flood most of the television programming as well as the print in our magazines and newspapers. You know who I mean. Those individuals that are famous simply for being famous. It seems as though you can't go anywhere without hearing about their latest escapades. Recently there was one such star that was in the news because of her marriage to another star, which in the end turned out not to be a "real" marriage but only a publicity stunt to boost her career.

Starstruck...

But the question that I would like to ask is not, why are these individuals so famous, but rather, why are we so obsessed them? What is it about their lives that make many in our culture today want to follow their every move? I'm not really sure what the answer is, but one thing is certain and that is that these so-called stars are here to stay.

As we enter the Advent season, we here at Sligo also desire to place our focus on a star. Not the type that I just mentioned, but rather a star that pointed to the greatest event in human history. The star that I am referring to of course is the star mentioned in Matthew 2:1-2: Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him."

Our theme at Sligo for the Advent Season is Star of Wonder. And just as the Wise Men of old were captivated by the Star of Bethlehem because they recognized that it would ultimately lead them to the Christ, our desire is to follow that star in hopes that we too will be led to Christ anew. Our prayer is that you will be with us for the entire month of December as we prepare for our journey to follow the brightest star that has ever been born.
