Ready or Not

Greetings!
On Wednesday, my wife and I returned from taking our youngest daughter Victoria back to Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama where she is a Sophomore majoring in Broadcast Journalism. It is hard to believe that in just a couple of months she will reach the ripe old age of 19. It is hard for me to get the picture of her as a little girl in pigtails out of my mind. And to top it off, Maureen and I will celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary tomorrow. All I can say is, "where has all the time gone?" You see, I've discovered that time has a way of moving on whether we are ready or not.

Ready or Not...
For many people, time seems to be one commodity that they just don't have enough of. Instead of time becoming their friend, it is viewed more as a tyrant. But on the other hand, there are those that manage just fine with the time they have been given. And by the way, no one has an advantage when it comes to this thing called time, at least not when it comes to the amount of minutes and hours in a day. There is a song from the Broadway play Rent that reminds us that we all have the same 525, 600 minutes in a single year.
So if we've all been given the same allotment of time, why is it that some are able to accomplish so much while others appear to be constantly languishing for more? When I think of one of my heroes, the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the many incredible things that he was able to accomplish, l always have to remind myself that he was only thirty nine years of age when his life abruptly came to an end. I know that may be hard for you to believe, but it's true.
Because time is such an important and limited commodity, scripture has some good counsel as to how it should be used. In Psalm 90:12, it says: "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."
In other words, we should become good stewards of our time just as we are of our money. We are to make good use of all the time that we have been given. And since none of us knows what the future holds, we are to make good use of the only time we have in our hands and that is the present. Because before we know it, our present will soon become our future. Whether we are ready are not!

Project Top Grade
At the Church Business Meeting on Tuesday, May 3, Sligo Church voted for Sligo Adventist School (SAS) and Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church to partner with the Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference in donating funds to update Sligo School's physical facilities and improve the overall educational experience. As a result of the generous gifts of over a million dollars from Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference, funds will be made available for a new HVAC, fire alarm system, fire doors, new windows and other needed repairs, plus provide professional development for teachers and special tutoring for students. Our part is to provide scholarships for needy students. SAS and Sligo Church will be expected to raise $350,000 to be placed in a special scholarship fund for students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Christian education.
We invite you to be a part of this investment in our children by placing your funds in the Giving Envelope, and marking it Project "TOP GRADE," which stands for Project Takoma Park: Guaranteeing Revitalized Adventist Education. For more information about this project, please call Principal Larry Rich at (240) 464-7054. Or give online here.
