Greetings!
The call to become a follower of Christ is also the call to become a servant. The word servant is not one that many like to use today, but nonetheless, it is what is required of all those who make a decision to become a disciple of Jesus Christ. In Jesus' day the word servant took on the connotation of a slave; one who was bound by his/her station in life to serve. It was Jesus himself who best demonstrated this when He washed the disciples feet. When Peter protested the washing of his feet by Jesus on the grounds that this kind of behavior was not fitting for a leader, Christ made it clear to them all that the quality most needed to be a leader in His kingdom is a willingness to first become a servant (John 13:8).

The Greatest ...

Many believe that in order to be the type of leader that Christ requires makes you weak or soft. The boxing champ Muhammad Ali constantly referred to himself as the greatest because of what he could do with his hands in rendering his opponents in the ring helpless. But Jesus had other thoughts on this. According to him, "The greatest among you will be your servant." (Matthew 23:11) And if anyone knew what best defined true greatness, it was definitely Jesus. You see greatness in God's eyes has nothing to do with the things that we have received -- titles, honors, and awards, but it has everything to do with how much we are willing to give. You see in God's eyes, the greatest are those who are willing to give of themselves, many times with no regard for personal gain or benefit.
This Sabbath the Sligo family sadly bids a farewell to one of the greatest men I know, Pastor John Wagner. Pastor Wagner has served the Sligo family for nearly five years as the pastor for administration. And although John may have many titles, awards and honors that have been bestowed upon him over the years, these are not the things that make him great. What makes John Wagner great, not only in my eyes, but in the eyes of so many is that if ever there was a servant leader, it is John Wagner. John has taught us all what it truly means to be a servant of Jesus Christ, and he will be greatly missed. Our prayers are with him as he takes on a new but very familiar task as the Interim President for Union College. I pray that we will never forget the example that he has left for us all to follow. And in following his example, I am confident that it will lead us to the feet of Jesus.

Project Top Grade
At the Church Business Meeting on Tuesday, May 3, Sligo Church voted for Sligo Adventist School (SAS) and Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church to partner with the Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference in donating funds to update Sligo School's physical facilities and improve the overall educational experience. As a result of the generous gifts of over a million dollars from Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference, funds will be made available for a new HVAC, fire alarm system, fire doors, new windows and other needed repairs, plus provide professional development for teachers and special tutoring for students. Our part is to provide scholarships for needy students. SAS and Sligo Church will be expected to raise $350,000 to be placed in a special scholarship fund for students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Christian education.
We invite you to be a part of this investment in our children by placing your funds in the Giving Envelope, and marking it Project "TOP GRADE," which stands for Project Takoma Park: Guaranteeing Revitalized Adventist Education. For more information about this project, please call Principal Larry Rich at (240) 464-7054. Or give online here.
