Greetings!
In just two weeks Sligo Church will be celebrating its Homecoming Weekend. For those of you who might be new to our fellowship, this will be our second opportunity to celebrate this occasion. And as with any homecoming celebration, our goal is to reach out, reclaim as well as reconnect with those from our past. I continue to find it amazing that no matter where my travels take me, more than you might think, I am always approached by those who will tell me that they have been associated with Sligo over the years in one way or another. And what is even more interesting is that, although they may no longer be a part of our local congregation, they take pride in letting me know that in many cases their membership is still here. And if not their membership, their hearts will forever remain with us. In essence they were saying, "Home is where the heart is."

Home Is Where the Heart Is ...

I believe that says a great deal for our church. And when I say church, I am not referring to the newly renovated sanctuary, which is breathtaking in my opinion, or the organ with all its magnificence. But when I say church, in essence I am speaking about you. The people who help to create the memories that continue to live in the hearts of those who have long since left our pews. It's the relationships that were formed and the spirit of inclusion that so many found refreshing here at Sligo that allows the love they have for this church to continue to burn brightly. It is this spirit that my wife and I brag about wherever and whenever we have the opportunity to share the story that is Sligo. Although we don't take time to say it to you often, we thank God for you and what you have become in our lives.
As you know, in preparation for this reunion on August 5-6, we have designated Homecoming Sabbath as one of our OSR (Organ Sanctuary Renovation) Days of Sacrificial Giving. Because of the diligent work by Dr. James Gulley and the stewardship Committee, along with your faithfulness, we are well on our way to realizing our goal, which as you know, will allow us to support many other ministries in our church and community, such as the Health Fair that will take place in Langley Park the Sabbath afternoon of Homecoming celebration. We are so excited about this opportunity to serve our neighbors in a very tangible way. Pastor Brillhart and the Health Team here at Sligo, in conjunction with Washington Adventist Hospital and Washington Adventist University, will be taking a message to our neighbors that Jesus cares about them. That's what I call a powerful demonstration of God's love and grace.
In closing, I leave with you this statement from the book Ministry of Healing pg. 143 as we continue to reflect on our purpose and mission here at Sligo. Here Ellen White states:
"Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Savior mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, "Follow Me."

Project Top Grade
At the Church Business Meeting on Tuesday, May 3, Sligo Church voted for Sligo Adventist School (SAS) and Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church to partner with the Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference in donating funds to update Sligo School's physical facilities and improve the overall educational experience. As a result of the generous gifts of over a million dollars from Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference, funds will be made available for a new HVAC, fire alarm system, fire doors, new windows and other needed repairs, plus provide professional development for teachers and special tutoring for students. Our part is to provide scholarships for needy students. SAS and Sligo Church will be expected to raise $350,000 to be placed in a special scholarship fund for students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Christian education.
We invite you to be a part of this investment in our children by placing your funds in the Giving Envelope, and marking it Project "TOP GRADE," which stands for Project Takoma Park: Guaranteeing Revitalized Adventist Education. For more information about this project, please call Principal Larry Rich at (240) 464-7054. Or give online here.
