Greetings!
By the time you read this edition of the eWeekend, Maureen and I will be on our way back to the United States. I must say that our time spent here in the United Kingdom was a blessing in many ways. There is something about traveling outside the United States that helps to provide a better sense of perspective of just how big our God is. One of the blessings that we received was, to our surprise, we discovered that Sligo members Nick and Ruth Satlemeijer were in London as well, and that Nick would be giving the prayer for the Sabbath service. I guess you could say that was God's way of making us feel right at home.

The Love Church ...

As I mentioned in the last edition of eWeekend, I was invited by the British Union to speak at their constituency session where I was given the theme, "That the World May Know," to which I added "God's Love." I challenged the more than two thousand in attendance with the words that Jesus left with His disciples just prior to His betrayal in John 13:33-35: "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
I recognize the theme of love in many cases has been reduced to mere sentimentality, but the love that Jesus speaks of here is much more than that. Jesus is making it clear, not only to those in His company, but to all who will become disciples in the future, that the identifying mark that distinguishes His followers from the rest of the world is the love that they possess one for the other. In John 17 we find Jesus even praying that His disciples, present as well as future, will one day be able to show the world that they truly know how to love the way that God loves.
Many times, as believers, we complain when our prayers seem to go unanswered. Well, when you think about it, doesn't Jesus have that right as well? Have we allowed His prayer to go unanswered in our lives? Have we developed the ability to love one another the way that God loves us, unconditionally? My prayer is that we won't have Christ wait in vain and that we will begin to allow His Spirit to transform us to become a church that is known for its love, more than it is for its doctrine. The words to one of my favorite songs puts it this way, "And they shall know we are Christians by our love, by our love. And they'll know we are Christians by our love." Who says Amen to that?

Project Top Grade
At the Church Business Meeting on Tuesday, May 3, Sligo Church voted for Sligo Adventist School (SAS) and Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church to partner with the Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference in donating funds to update Sligo School's physical facilities and improve the overall educational experience. As a result of the generous gifts of over a million dollars from Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference, funds will be made available for a new HVAC, fire alarm system, fire doors, new windows and other needed repairs, plus provide professional development for teachers and special tutoring for students. Our part is to provide scholarships for needy students. SAS and Sligo Church will be expected to raise $350,000 to be placed in a special scholarship fund for students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Christian education.
We invite you to be a part of this investment in our children by placing your funds in the Giving Envelope, and marking it Project "TOP GRADE," which stands for Project Takoma Park: Guaranteeing Revitalized Adventist Education. For more information about this project, please call Principal Larry Rich at (240) 464-7054. Or give online here.
