One Day at a Time

sligo sanctuary

Greetings!

As I shared with you in the last edition of eWeekend, the Potomac Conference held its annual camp meeting recently on the campus of Shenandoah Valley Academy. What I did not share with you is that I had the privilege of conducting a three day workshop on the topic of prayer. As you know, one of the classes that I teach at Washington Adventist University is a class that I developed on the topic of prayer. I developed this class out of a personal desire that I have to help young and old alike make prayer an integral part of their daily lives.

One Day at a Time ...

The title of my camp meeting presentation was, When All You Can Do Is Pray: Studies On the Power and Purpose of Prayer. The focus of this presentation was that as Christians, prayer should never be viewed as something that we merely engage in as a last resort, but instead it should be the daily, life-giving communication with God that it was meant to be.

One of my favorite authors on the topic of prayer that has greatly influenced my personal prayer life is E. M. Bounds. It has been said that since the time of the apostles, no man besides Bounds has left such a rich inheritance of biblical research into the life of prayer. Having personally read many, if not all of his writings on this topic, I must say that I am inclined to agree.

In staff meeting this week, I shared a statement that Bounds made as it relates to Jesus' words in the Lord's prayer which say, "Give us this day, our daily bread."  In his book titled The Necessity of Prayer he has this to say: "We do not live for tomorrow, but for today. We do not look for tomorrow's grace or tomorrow's bread. Those who live in the present thrive best and get the most out of life. Those who pray best pray for today's, not tomorrow's needs. Our prayer for tomorrow's needs may be unnecessary because they may not exist at all!"

Oh if we could only live our lives in the moment of today instead of dragging all of the cares and fears of tomorrow, which by the way most of which will never come to fruition, into our existence of today. If we could only take Jesus' words to heart when he said, "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

I challenge each of us to learn the lesson that God taught Israel via the manna miracle, in the wilderness, as they made their way from Egypt to the Land of Promise. It was the lesson of trusting in God daily to meet their needs for each day and not to become overly concerned about what they would need for tomorrow. May God help us to learn this lesson through His love and grace as we make it our goal to take one day at a time.

At the Church Business Meeting on Tuesday, May 3, Sligo Church voted for Sligo Adventist School (SAS) and Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church to partner with the Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference in donating funds to update Sligo School's physical facilities and improve the overall educational experience. As a result of the generous gifts of over a million dollars from Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference, funds will be made available for a new HVAC, fire alarm system, fire doors, new windows and other needed repairs, plus provide professional development for teachers and special tutoring for students. Our part is to provide scholarships for needy students. SAS and Sligo Church will be expected to raise $350,000 to be placed in a special scholarship fund for students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Christian education.

We invite you to be a part of this investment in our children by placing your funds in the Giving Envelope, and marking it Project "TOP GRADE," which stands for Project Takoma Park: Guaranteeing Revitalized Adventist Education. For more information about this project, please call Principal Larry Rich at (240) 464-7054.
