As you know, camp meetings in the Adventist church go back to the early days of the Millerite movement before our church was officially established. Camp meeting was then, and continues to be today a source of revival and renewal for many of our members across the globe. ...(read more below) |

Follow the Leader ... The theme for this year's encampment is simply "Follow Me." These simple, but yet challenging words of Jesus, although spoken originally to the disciples of old, continue to speak to the hearts of every disciple today. And the reason that I say that these words are challenging is because inherent in the call to follow Jesus is always the call to cease from following those things that oppose the very thing to which we are being called. You see, a call to follow Christ is a call to turn away from anything or anyone that opposes the values for which Jesus and His kingdom stand. The words "follow me" are at the heart of what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ. When I was a child one of the games that we would love to play was follow the leader. Now you must remember that this was during a time that preceded all the electronic games that hold much of this current generation hostage. When I was growing up the only thing that was needed to play many of the games we participated in were people. In essence, we were the game. Well the goal in the game of follow the leader was that after a leader was chosen, those that remained would simply line up behind that individual and then it was their job to mimic whatever he or she would do. If the leader stood on one leg then it meant that we were to do the same, that is if we wanted to remain in the game. And herein lies the challenge for all who desire to be a disciple and that it is the fight to remain in the game. We must never forget that the enemies' objective is to distract us from the call to follow our leader to ultimately him becoming our leader. My prayer is that we will learn a lesson from that simple game that we played as children; to follow our leader to do whatever and to go wherever He leads. Senior Pastor | |
Project Top Grade
At the Church Business Meeting on Tuesday, May 3, Sligo Church voted for Sligo Adventist School (SAS) and Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church to partner with the Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference in donating funds to update Sligo School's physical facilities and improve the overall educational experience. As a result of the generous gifts of over a million dollars from Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference, funds will be made available for a new HVAC, fire alarm system, fire doors, new windows and other needed repairs, plus provide professional development for teachers and special tutoring for students. Our part is to provide scholarships for needy students. SAS and Sligo Church will be expected to raise $350,000 to be placed in a special scholarship fund for students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Christian education.
We invite you to be a part of this investment in our children by placing your funds in the Giving Envelope, and marking it Project "TOP GRADE," which stands for Project Takoma Park: Guaranteeing Revitalized Adventist Education. For more information about this project, please call Principal Larry Rich at (240) 464-7054.
