Shower of Blessing

sligo sanctuary

Greetings!

Last week's eWeekend as you know was inspired by the time I spent weeding my garden. Well this week's edition has a similar source of inspiration. As I was going out to water my garden yesterday I noticed something that I guess you could say caught me by surprise. I was shocked to see that my beautiful green lawn was now becoming very brown. But it wasn't just my lawn that was beginning to turn brown, but all of my neighbor's lawns as well. What is the culprit you ask? It is none other than the scorching heat that has plagued our area over the past few days. And the question that everyone is now asking is, "where is the rain?"

Shower of Blessings ...

Now I don't know about you, but there are times that I complain when it rains. After all when it rains there are more accidents on the road, fewer people show up for worship services, and of course when it rains my plans for playing tennis go down the drain. Unless I play indoors that is, but then I have to pay to do that. But I don't think too many of us would be complaining if it were to rain for the next few days. Why? Because we desperately need it!

And this brings me to the heart of my message today. Just as we need rain to help the vegetation to become nice and green, we also need the showers of pain and disappointment to help keep our spiritual lives green as well. We may not realize it at the time that they are being poured into our lives, but after these showers have given way to rays of sunshine, then we realize just how essential they were to our growth and development. And as Jesus reminds us in Matthew 5:45, it is God who allows both the sun as well as the rain to come into our lives.

I believe it was the American poet Henry Longfellow who said, "Into every life a little rain must fall." And oh how true these words are when it comes to that of the life of the Christian. I'm sure we would all rather have a life where we only experienced the rays of the sun, but as we see with nature, we need both if we are going to remain healthy and experience growth. So the next time the rains spoil your plans, even if they interrupt your tennis game, rejoice because with every shower comes a blessing, whether we realize it or not.

At the Church Business Meeting on Tuesday, May 3, Sligo Church voted for Sligo Adventist School (SAS) and Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church to partner with the Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference in donating funds to update Sligo School's physical facilities and improve the overall educational experience. As a result of the generous gifts of over a million dollars from Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference, funds will be made available for a new HVAC, fire alarm system, fire doors, new windows and other needed repairs, plus provide professional development for teachers and special tutoring for students. Our part is to provide scholarships for needy students. SAS and Sligo Church will be expected to raise $350,000 to be placed in a special scholarship fund for students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Christian education.

We invite you to be a part of this investment in our children by placing your funds in the Giving Envelope, and marking it Project "TOP GRADE," which stands for Project Takoma Park: Guaranteeing Revitalized Adventist Education. For more information about this project, please call Principal Larry Rich at (240) 464-7054.
