The Unwanted Guest

sligo sanctuary

Greetings!

This morning before I got too far into my day I decided to spend some time in my flower garden. As I have mentioned many times from the pulpit, my garden is one of the places where I love to "hang out." There is something about being close to nature and holding it in my hands that is very therapeutic for me.  Whenever I have a lot on my mind I can always go to my garden and find the refuge and peace for which my heart longs.

The Unwanted Guest...

Well, you can imagine how distraught I was when I discovered that weeds had invaded my garden in what seemed like overnight. The first thought that came to my mind was, "where did these weeds come from? I didn't plant them." And that's what so strange about weeds. You don't have to plant them in order for them to take root in your garden; they just show up like an uninvited guest at a party. As a matter of fact, I don't know of anyone that has ever gone to a garden store and asked for a package of weeds so that they could plant them in their garden. And why would they? Weeds tend to choke out the life of your plants as well as take the nourishment that is needed for them to grow and become healthy and strong.

But just as there are weeds growing in our gardens, there are weeds that tend to sprout up in the gardens of our lives as well. And just as they can choke out the life in our plants they can do the same with the life that God desires to have with his children. There are the weeds of jealousy and deception and the weeds of selfishness and discontent. All of these , if allowed to remain in the soil of our lives ,will eventually choke out our life with the Lord. And just as I need to spend time each day pulling out the weeds out of my garden, each of us needs to spend time daily ridding our lives of these weeds as well. But what I discovered while working in my garden this morning was that if I wet the soil first, I was able to pull those pesky weeds out by the root with very little effort. Think about it for a moment. If we allow our lives to experience a daily watering with the word of God, just imagine how much easier it will be to rid our spiritual gardens of these unwanted guests as well.

As I close, I leave you with the words from one of my favorite hymns. I pray that they will be as water to your sin-parched soul.

I come to the garden alone

While the dew is still on the roses

And the voice I hear falling on my ear

                                The Son of God discloses.

Refrain

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice,
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.

 good gradeProject Top Grade

At the Church Business Meeting on Tuesday, May 3, Sligo Church voted for Sligo Adventist School (SAS) and Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church to partner with the Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference in donating funds to update Sligo School's physical facilities and improve the overall educational experience. As a result of the generous gifts of over a million dollars from Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference, funds will be made available for a new HVAC, fire alarm system, fire doors, new windows and other needed repairs, plus provide professional development for teachers and special tutoring for students. Our part is to provide scholarships for needy students. SAS and Sligo Church will be expected to raise $350,000 to be placed in a special scholarship fund for students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Christian education.

We invite you to be a part of this investment in our children by placing your funds in the Giving Envelope, and marking it Project "TOP GRADE," which stands for Project Takoma Park: Guaranteeing Revitalized Adventist Education. For more information about this project, please call Principal Larry Rich at (240) 464-7054.
