The Great Disappointment ... Again?
|

Greetings!
Well, May 21, 2011 has come and gone and Jesus has not returned as predicted by Harold Camping and others. But how many of us really expected him to return? After all, aren't Jesus' words clear in Matthew 24:36, that as it relates to his return that no one, including himself, has a clue when this great event will occur except the Father?

The Great Disappointment ... Again? That being said, why are we so caught up in trying to set dates for the Second Coming? Don't we realize how this makes us look to the world that already thinks that Christians are strange to begin with, especially groups like Seventh-day Adventists? Now I'm not saying that we were a part of this latest movement of date setting, but as I mentioned previously, the early pioneers of our church had their fair share of date setting. In 1865, James White, husband to Ellen White and one of the founding members of our church, publicly denounced a couple that had announced their plans to wed because it "denied their faith" in the Second Advent, since "such a step seemed to contemplate years of life in this world." Yes we as Advent believers have had our fair share of date setting, but we've also had our share of disappointment as well. When Jesus did not return on October 22, 1844 as predicted by William Miller and the other "Millerites," there was weeping and gnashing of teeth. Men and women were not only publicly humiliated, but they were devastated in many ways, including financially. This was such a huge event that the story was carried on the front pages of many of the newspapers of the day. But such was not the case this time. I don't know about you but I could barely find any news on May 22 relating to what had occurred, or should I say, what hadn't occurred. Can we really refer to this as a true disappointment? And if not, is it because we are so proficient in Scripture that we weren't duped this time, or could it be that we're really not all that excited about Christ's return, especially not anytime soon. Well I guess only time will tell for sure. Senior Pastor | |
Operation Top Grade
At the Church Business Meeting on Tuesday, May 3, Sligo Church voted for Sligo Adventist School (SAS) and Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church to partner with the Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference in donating funds to update Sligo School's physical facilities and improve the overall educational experience. As a result of the generous gifts of over a million dollars from Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference, funds will be made available for a new HVAC, fire alarm system, fire doors, new windows and other needed repairs, plus provide professional development for teachers and special tutoring for students. Our part is to provide scholarships for needy students. SAS and Sligo Church will be expected to raise $350,000 to be placed in a special scholarship fund for students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Christian education.
We invite you to be a part of this investment in our children by placing your funds in the Giving Envelope, and marking it Operation "TOP GRADE," which stands for Project Takoma Park: Guaranteeing Revitalized Adventist Education. For more information about this project, please call Principal Larry Rich at (240) 464-7054. |
