Greetings!
Well as most of you already know, the latest prediction for the return of Jesus, along with its impending doom, is slated for this Sabbath May 21, 2011 at 6 p.m. Harold Camping, the leader of this movement, along with thousands of his followers are preparing for this event with great diligence. Many of these men and women have already sold their earthly possessions as well as given notice to their employers as they prepare to await the imminent return of Christ. Even CNN has gotten hold of the story and has begun its own unofficial countdown.

What if? ... But what if Camping is right? What if Jesus were to return this Sabbath? Now, I'm not saying that Camping is accurate in predicting this event. Scripture makes it clear that no one actually knows the time of Jesus' return. But what if by coincidence he was right? Do you find this thought appealing or does it create a bit of apprehension in your soul? Would you want to shout for joy or would you rather that he just wait? Wait for what you ask? Maybe wait until you are married if you're currently single. Or wait until you finish your education, or have at least one child? Maybe our focus shouldn't be so much on Camping and his prediction for Christ's return, but rather on our readiness or the lack thereof to receive him. In Luke 18:8 Jesus asks this question in relationship to his coming: "Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he really find faith on the earth?" Is the return of Jesus in our lifetime something that many of us truly long for in our hearts or is it something that we're only comfortable with as long as it remains as an event that is still off in the distance? What if Jesus were to return this Sabbath? Well, if he does, I guarantee you that it won't be because Camping or anyone else predicted it. But it will simply be because he is ready to return. I don't know about you, but for me, that's reason enough. Senior Pastor | |
Operation Top Grade
At the Church Business Meeting on Tuesday, May 3, Sligo Church voted for Sligo Adventist School (SAS) and Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church to partner with the Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference in donating funds to update Sligo School's physical facilities and improve the overall educational experience. As a result of the generous gifts of over a million dollars from Commonweal Foundation and the Potomac Conference, funds will be made available for a new HVAC, fire alarm system, fire doors, new windows and other needed repairs, plus provide professional development for teachers and special tutoring for students. Our part is to provide scholarships for needy students. SAS and Sligo Church will be expected to raise $350,000 to be placed in a special scholarship fund for students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Christian education.
We invite you to be a part of this investment in our children by placing your funds in the Giving Envelope, and marking it Operation "TOP GRADE," which stands for Project Takoma Park: Guaranteeing Revitalized Adventist Education. For more information about this project, please call Principal Larry Rich at (240) 464-7054. |
