Greetings!

On Wednesday, our own Washington Adventist University conducted their annual Service Day. This is a day when all classes are cancelled and the entire WAU family divides itself into groups and then goes into the community to render service to various projects and organizations. In my opinion, it is one of the best things that our campus does, because it allows us to truly reach out and touch those who need it most.

Servanthood...

As the events of the day began, I shared a devotional thought from Mark 10:41-45. This passage recounts the scenario when two of Jesus' disciples made a bold request that each of them be given a very prominent place in His kingdom: one to sit on His right and the other on His left. Now, I am of the opinion that this request wasn't made because of their love for Jesus and they just wanted to be close to Him. But I believe that by making this request, it revealed their desire for what many crave in our society today: power, privilege and prestige. In other words, it revealed the desire in their hearts to be great.

Now let me make this point perfectly clear. Jesus does not have a problem with us attaining the heights of greatness, as long as our idea of greatness is in tune with His. Jesus defines greatness this way: "... but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

Jesus makes it clear that being great is not about being served but it's about giving service. One of the greatest acts of service that Jesus performed while here on this earth was when he knelt down to wash the dusty, corn-infested feet of His disciples; a duty that was reserved primarily for slaves and servants. Slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve."

The question that needs to be answered by us today is, "do we want to sit next to Jesus?" It is a question I believe that the WAU community answered on Wednesday with a resounding YES!
