From 30,000 feet
On the flight from BWI to San Diego I spent the majority of my time helpless as I sat in the middle seat with very little leg or arm to spare. I must admit that there were times when I felt that I was in "airline prison." I'm sure you know what I mean? Regardless of how I would position myself, I just couldn't seem to get comfortable. You can imagine the excitement I felt when I discovered that on the return flight home I would be able to occupy a window seat. There is something about being able to look out at the clouds that seem to bring out the kid in me. But I also discovered that having a window seat allowed me to see things from a completely different point of view than when I was I caught in the middle.
And for many of us, that is the way we are living our lives. Occupying the middle seat, feeling trapped in by life's trials and challenges that are there to greet us regardless of which way we turn. And because we feel trapped it causes us to forget that our faith in God is there to provide us with a window seat; a way to see things from His point of view. As the writer to Hebrews reminds us, "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
This Sabbath I will continue with part two of our series The Nature of Our Nurture which is based on Galatians 6:1-6. In this message we will examine our role as disciples to those of our fallen comrades. What should be our response to those who have fallen? Is it to drive them out of the fold or do we have an obligation to nurture them back into a state of wholeness? Or should they forever remain Casualties of War?
May God's blessings be with us all as we continue to look through the window of our faith. Whether we find ourselves in an airplane at thirty thousand feet stuck in the middle seat, or driving in our cars stuck in traffic on the beltway. Always striving to see things from God's point of view.
