Beginning with Germantown, Pennsylvania, German immigrants founded the first German settlement in America on October 6, 1683. Many other towns and villages were founded since that time by immigrants from the German-speaking countries of Europe. Numerous cities also saw the emergence of German districts and neighborhoods and countless sites across the country reflect the German heritage. Many are worthy of visiting and hopefully readers might want to include in their future travel plans.
The German-American Hall of Fame (GAMHOF)would like to introduce this new series of vignettes providing brief sketches of towns, villages and sites that reflect the influence of German immigration and settlement. These are written by GAMHOF Trustee and Historian, Dr. Don Heinrich Tolzmann, an award-winning author of many works dealing with German-American history, literature, and culture, who has been called "Mr. German-Americana" as well as "the dean of German-American Studies." For biographical information, see: http://www.gamhof.org/bio_tolzmann.html.
GAMHOF will periodically provide its subscribers with this interesting reviews of towns, villages and sites noted for their German heritage.
GAMHOF was established in 2004 by prominent Americans of German ancestry to recognize and celebrate the impact of German immigrants and their progeny to the United States by highlighting some of the most remarkable German-Americans through a virtual "Hall of Fame."
