President's Message

As our nation and California continue its economic recovery, we at MAOF are confident that times will indeed get better and that once again we will be in a position to continue offering the much needed services we provide in our geographic service area.
It has been a challenging time for many in California and certainly for low and moderate income working families who depend on quality and affordable child care to maintain their jobs and sustain their families. At MAOF, we are proud to be doing our part to help achieve this goal and bring this service into reality for those who need it the most.
Yet, in this difficult time, we at MAOF along with other non-proift organizations who provide needed services and who depend on public and private dollars to deliver our mission to the neediest, must now work harder than ever to form collaboratives and explore new ways of securing new resources to fill the gap. We are thankful to the National Alliance for Hispanic Health for recently providing funding for "Nuestros Tesoros Program". This much needed grant will allow MAOF to expand its Development Department to tap into private Foundation funds to bring new innovative programs to our communities.
For the first time, we recently ventured into North Las Vegas, Nevada and began offering Financial Literacy services. We have also successfully opened our first Computer Clubhouse in South Central Los Angeles to provide computer training and promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers to our youth in a safe after-school setting. It is new innovative programs such as these that will help MAOF achieve its mission in new ways to promote the socio-economic betterment in our communities!
Sincerely,
Martin Castro

Computer Clubhouse: Where Middle School Science and Math Excel!
"The best thing about the Computer Clubhouse is the fact that we can explore, learn and create. The Clubhouse has been a safe haven for me and I see that it's still a safe haven for many of my friends. Plus, we learn alot!" -- Participating Youth
Two years ago, MAOF partnered with ListoAmerica to launch a neighborhood place where local middle school youths could learn more about math, science and technology. Located on Florence Avenue near the Los Angeles Metro corridor, the MAOF Computer Clubhouse serves between 25-45 middle school youths a day. Staffed with full-time instructors, engineering professionals from Northrop Grumman tutor the youth. In addition, there is a comprehensive science and math curriculum used that is based on Intel's Computer Clubhouse Learning Model . This Science, Technology, Engineering and Math approach is four-pronged: Learning By Design; Follow Your Interests; Building a Community; Respect and Trust. Kids not only learn more about the STEM fields but grow more confident about their science and math skills.
Supported by AT&T, Northrop Grumman, and Intel, The Computer Clubhouse is always looking for new friends. For more information about how you can help out at the Computer Clubhouse or for a visit, please call our Development Department at (323) 278-3605 or email your inquiry to mreyes@maof.org |

MAOF Staff Spotlight
Kathy Tafoya

How long have you been with MAOF?
I was a volunteer since 1962. I met Mr. Morales while I was working for the Attorney General's office. He had a friend who was a deputy attorney (Carlos Borja). I was introduced to him and he later invited me to assist him and several other community and professional members to create and design MAOF. All the volunteers helped raise enough money to incorporate and open an office in Pico Rivera... I remained a volunteer for 10 years and was hired in 1973 as Assistant to the President .
What do you remember about your first day on the job?
My first day of work was very hard trying to remember everybody's name and title. I had to learn many new things and think of non profits as they are a totally different type of business and I had no one to learn from, but I soon learned. Many of us did a variety of things, on weekends we would paint the new centers, fundraise with pancake breakfasts and had fun while being part of something very new to the community which was childcare centers.
How have you seen MAOF change for the better in the past 10 years?
In the past 10 years, under the leadership of Martin Castro, we have grown by many millions and expansions in programs due to MAOF 's leadership, great board members, good reputation and accountability .
Share a happy MAOF memory?
The happy memory I have is being able to see Mr. Morales continue to contribute by way of wisdom and experience and his dream seeing MAOF grow after his retirement, He then knew that MAOF was built of a solid foundation
.
What is your favorite food from the MAOF store?
My favorite food of the MAOF retail training center is chile Colorado with meat and enchiladas.
Additional Words.....
In closing, I have met and had great relationships with the MAOF family.. I love them all and will always cherish their friendship. |
