Director's Message |
April 2011 Greetings!
In 2010, the Education Program launched a new degree and professional licensure program for school leaders. Leadership Development for Educators (LEDE) is a two-part program that deepens the expertise of learning-focused teacher leaders and prepares candidates for the Principal's credential. The innovative LEDE Program values job-embedded learning and is unique in that it is:
- Orientated around the core activity of supporting teaching and learning
- Entirely performance-based
- Built around evidence from the best research
- Operated in partnership with a cluster of K12 school districts and organizational partners
The challenge teachers face in meeting the learning needs of every student in their classroom calls for teamwork with learning-focused teacher leaders and school principals. The LEDE Program is committed to high quality preparation for these important instructional leaders.
The first cohort of LEDE candidates will be graduating at the end of spring quarter with their M.Ed. and Washington Principal's credential. We congratulate this inaugural cohort and wish them every success as they head out into important leadership positions in our region.
In addition, we congratulate all graduates of the Education Program this year. At a time of unprecedented challenges, we are proud of our graduates and the role they play in our schools and communities.
Best wishes, Bradley Portin, Director and Professor

Congratulations! Congratulations to the outstanding group of students who completed their studies and to those who earned their residency teaching certification autumn and winter quarters in the following programs: - Master of Education Degree - 26 graduates
- National Board Portfolio - 11 participants
- Secondary and Middle Level Teacher Certification Cohort '11 - 25 new teachers
We are tremendously proud of you for your academic achievements! Thank you! On behalf of the secondary teacher candidates, the education program thanks the cooperating teachers and clinical faculty who supported our secondary students in their field placements. These highly skilled mentors guided our students through the complexities of applying learning from university courses and previous experiences to student learning in area classrooms at Bothell High School, Cascade High School, Canyon Park Junior High, Kellogg Middle School, Jackson High School, and Mariner High School. The UW Bothell clinical faculty for 2010-11 and their areas of expertise were: Andrea Escame-Hedger, mathematics; Char Alkire, science and mathematics; Stu Dick, science and mathematics; Carol Podney Wartman, language arts and social studies; and Jo Rosner, social studies. UW Bothell is fortunate to work with such experienced, skilled, and dedicated educators. "Math matters" to K-8 Teacher Certification cohort X12!
In winter quarter, the members of cohort X12 were inspired to act on their core values regarding equity in education. Through Donors Choose, the cohort helped fund the purchase of math education materials (including manipulatives) for a classroom in Washington state in which many of the students are at poverty level. The cohort made the donation as the self-named group "Teachers for P.E.A.C.E. (Professionally Educating All Children Equally)". UW Bothell success story Carole Kubota, Ph.D, Associate Professor Emeritus, recently visited | Deborah Anderson |
Debra Anderson's classroom and had this to say, "Fifth graders at Horizon View Elementary in Everett are fortunate to have Debra Anderson as their teacher. Science is one of their favorite subjects and these students are studying pendulums. Debra followed her dream to become a teacher, first graduating from Cascadia Community College (2004) and then UW Bothell with a B. A. in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences with a minor in Education in 2006. After being accepted into the K-8 Teacher Certification Program, Debra graduated with her teaching certificate in 2007 and started teaching at Horizon View the following September. She will finish her M.Ed. at UW Bothell this spring and then will work towards National Board Certification. She is truly a Cascadia Community College/UW Bothell success story!"

Tim (Mr. Tim) Titsworth - K-8 Teacher Certification Cohort 5, "This is my 3rd year at Claremont Preparatory School in New York City, where I am a 4th grade head teacher and middle school track coach - good fun! Each morning I am greeted by 12 happy learners and together we explore reading, writing, math and social studies. When I can I infuse music; sometimes singing, sometimes with dance, and often in drum circle mode. Before working at Claremont, I was a 3rd grade teacher at Oyster Bilingual School in Washington, D.C., and a 7th grade Language Arts teacher at M.S. 104 in Manhattan. I have truly enjoyed the journey and each day I look forward to more. Each one...teach one!"
Caroline Huxtable - K-8 Teacher Certification Cohort lucky 13. "I was extremely lucky to land a teaching position on a remote island in the San Juans. We have no ferry service, are completely off the grid and have a winter population of 70-ish. My K-8 certification is being used to teach all the grades, every day. I am in a one-room school house providing an education to 13 kids with every grade represented. All our kids are gifted, and all our kids struggle. Somehow, I have landed myself in a place where you can authentically try to answer the question "what is best for the student?". With this in mind, I get to choose the curriculum, and create my own classes. As a second year teacher this has been fun. Last year, as a first year teacher it was, well.... slightly stressful." Rachel McConville - K-8 Teacher Certification Cohort 13, spent 1 year subbing and is now 2nd grade teacher in the Snohomish School District.
