Courageous Leadership: A leader reaches out to support a GLBTQ network.

The following is an example of inclusive leadership In one of our client organizations.

Steve,* a supervisor who had recently participated in a White Men and Allies Learning Lab, approached his female staff member Leslie* to offer his support for establishing a GLBTQ network within the organization. Steve knew that Leslie was very private, but wanted to show his willingness to be an ally across difference. He chose to be courageous on a diversity issue in spite of any fear he had, risks involved, or any of his own discomfort.

Steve and team

Steve's choice to voice and stand by his support was all that was needed to spark Leslie's interest. She reached out to other GLBTQ in the company and they began forming a network.

Another impact of Steve's action was that Leslie felt safe enough to talk more openly about her life. When a crisis occurred in her personal life, she was able to tell her work team and receive their support and help. For Leslie, courage meant showing vulnerability in a way that modeled openness and authentic connection.
