 | Private Cinema", not "Home Theater"...
|
Two years ago I had the opportunity to spend 2 hours with John Meyer of Meyer Sound Lab in Berkeley. We were sitting in the Pearson Theater, and I used the term "Home Theater" at which John bristled. Meyer is now prominent in commercial theater and film mixing venues with their Ascheron series, and he quickly corrected me- "Private Cinema", not Home Theater.
To many very high-end residential theater designers and high-end equipment manufacturers a dedicated theater in a home should have the same or better design considerations as your local commercial theater. All too often home theater connotes a less expensive multi-channel receiver, 46" (or so) FPD, and 5-7 ceiing speakers with a sub tucked away in a corner. This configuration is a fine venue for a family area, but there are skills (acoustic and architectural) necessary to provide an over-the-top visual and audio experience in a dedicated venue. There are a group of professionals who can help with the design only, which may provide the most pratical way of exceeding customer expectations if you are provided the opportunity to offer a high budget residential theater. We are fortunate to have most of them work in Northern California and Hawaii.
With the evolution of the 2:35 aspect ratio and the probable use of 2- piece projection, it is common to use an anamorphic lens and mechanical sled to move that lens. This is "kludgy" at the very best. We now have a new generation of projector that provides multiple aspects natively at a fixed 2:35 or "super-wide".
The challenge of delivering sufficient SPL and dynamics to the entire space is another obstacle and requires efficient speakers and very, very powerful amplifiers- not so you can impair your hearing, but to accommodate dynamics and stay well below the clipping threshold of the amplifier. Speakers are much happier with more powerful amps, and you need to provide a reference105 dB throughout the listening area. If you start with a speaker that has a sensitivity of 89 db with 1 watt at 1 meter, and you have a back row at 8 meters, you will need kilowatt amps to deliver distortion-free results.

Avielo optix SuperWide235 utilizes a new high-capacity DLP® chip, developed by projectiondesign engineers in partnership with Texas Instruments®, that allows an image of 2538 x 1080 resolution to be displayed in the home for the first time without the use of additional optics. avielo's SuperWide235 format uses 78% more pixels for native 2:35 versus a standard 1080p projector with a Blu-ray disc 2:35 format movie. This increase in resolution is achieved without compromise, when the image goes from 1.78 to 2.35, the projector uses increased native resolution to expand the width of the image without impacting the height.
Rec. image size: up to about 400cm wide. Resolution: 2538 x 1080 pixels. Technology: DLP®
No more visual distortions, no more pin cushion problems. no more holding your breath..
