New additions to my Two Channel and Media Systems

RJ Electronics

Jeez, I'm a technology junkie...Until last week I had my entire CD collection ripped to FLAC on a Request server controlled by an ELO 15" touch screen.  Knowing that my Request would one day die (hard drives tend to do that) and with the addition of the new Mac mini to my Media System (running Windows 7 / Media Center on a boot camp partition), I found myself with an extra Mac mini.  I did a clean install of the OS and ripped my CD collection to Apple Lossless and scanned much of the art work to a higher resolution than what Gracenote provides. I'm decoding the Mac through the USB input on my Bryston DAC, amplified with a Bryston 14B, and played back on a pair of Totem Forest.  The result was well worth the effort and the sound quality is a clear level above the Request.  The new Apple "Remote" application for the iPhone and iPad is awesome.
I also added the Wadia 170, stripping the digital off an iPod decoded by my Bryston with surprisingly good results. The electronics are are fed with regenerated AC, pure power from my PS Audio Power Plant with the AC controlled and monitored with my PS Audio Power Play 9000 (controlled via my iPad, and any web browser for that matter). I also have the PS Audio Wave DAC with their newly released network card enabling me to stream LAN and WAN content with superb results.

Also In my Media System, in addition of adding the new Mac mini, I replaced my Roku box with the new Apple TV and wow!  What a wonderful appliance with seamless control from my iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone.

All are welcome to schedule time to see the latest and greatest and experience  exceptional two channel and media systems.. And experience the newest in Bryston, Stealth Acoustics, PS Audio, Totem Acoustic and Projection Design. As well as Logitech, Apple, Wadia, Samsung, Slingbox, and Oppo Digital.

My next addition will be the new Autonomic Controls media server.

Many of the products I use I don't represent and are not really relevant to our channel in a traditional sense- absence of profit and no limited distribution, but we all need to know them and figure out ways to embrace them, changing our provincial attitudes on old school distribution paths. Thank goodness for those manufacturers holding true to their support of the specialty market.

As I've said before, as long as we focus on our respective customer and provide then a superior experience, we will survive and grow; and have some fun in the process.

Bryston Nails It...Again

Bryston BDP-1

We are entering a new age for music enjoyment. We have an ability to reproduce recorded music with more accuracy and faithfulness than ever before. This has been enabled by the recent developments on recording and distributing music in 'high resolution' computer readable formats. Until recently any new format required an extensive infrastructure to get launched and need the cooperation of a complete chain of contributors and well as major investments to get underway. But with the continually increasing power of the personal computer and media like the internet and recordable DVD's it is now possible to distribute the highest resolution audio to anyone with the desire to play it. Many digital playback systems incorporate an 'all in one' approach to digital playback where the computer has the operating system (EX: Windows or Mac), the video interface, the CD ripper/player, the motherboard, the soundcard and the DAC's contained in one chassis. Think of this approach more as an audio 'receiver' rather than the more performance oriented approach of independent tuner, preamplifier and power amplifier in order to optimize performance in each specific area. This receiver approach is fine for what it is as it allows for a very easy solution for someone who is looking for ease of use. The problem is the performance suffers due to issues of noise and distortion created by this all in one approach. The computer is a great tool for searching and downloading content, but it may become a cumbersome tool for playback of quality content. The Bryston BDP-1 Digital Player is much easier to use in practice than a typical multipurpose desktop interface.
