Advocacy
We consider it imperative to our mission that we educate our members on pending
legislation that may have an impact on small business. There is presently
a bill which has passed the Illinois legislature and been presented to governor
Quinn for his signature. This bill, Illinois Senate Bill 1118, is an
example of such a legislation. In essence, this bill pits consumer
advocates, Plaintiff's attorneys and borrowers against the banking
industry. The former would like Governor Quinn to veto this legislation
while the banking industry is pushing for its passage. This issue
was recently presented to the SBAC and we wanted to educate our members
accordingly. To read a memo that was written on behalf of some of the bills
opponents, go to: Glenn Udell Memo To SBAC. They are urging Governor Quinn to veto this bill. Below
is the Illinois Banking Association's position paper on the
issue. http://www.ilbanker.com/Adobe/GR/SB_1118_Position_Paper.pdf?state=IL If
you Google the act, you will see materials written on both sides of this
issue. Dan Johnson-Weinberger is one of the folks involved in
the opposition to this legislation. If you are interested in learning more
about the issue, feel free to contact Dan at (312) 867-5377 or at dan.johnsonweinberger@gmail.com.
I have not been contacted by anyone from the banking industry with respect to
their position on the bill. However, we are sure you can get their point
of view by contacting the Illinois Banking Association at http://www.ilbanker.com/contact_us.asp. If there are any issues impacting small business that you would
like the SBAC to address, please call Blanca Campos at (847) 990-7909. |
