Advocacy
Dan Seals will be joining the SBAC this
Saturday, at 12:15p.m., at our Northfield Office. Mr. Seals is
running for United States Congress in the 10th Congressional District.
We
will talk about the challenges facing small businesses, and discuss Mr.
Seal's ideas for restoring credit to business owners. We would like to
thank Mr. Seals in advance for taking the time to talk with us.
We would also like to introduce the co-chairs
of the
SBAC advocacy committee:
Ron Cowgill | Ron Cowgill, owns D/R Services, a
remodeling firm that also installs solar panels, wind turbines and
creates
energy conservation programs. Ron also is a co-host of Mighty House Radio,
which can be heard on many stations in Chicago, including 820am. On
Mighty House, Ron talks about issues impacting business owners in the
construction industry, and provides help with home improvement and repair
issues.
Thomas Castillo | Thomas Castillo is an electrician
and recent candidate for Illinois Lt. Governor. Thomas received
over 100,000 votes in the Democratic primary. Thomas
is a passionate advocate for small and medium size
business owners. Notably, a study by the University of
Illinois found that Thomas led all statewide candidates in social media
and internet presence during the last primary. You can read a summary
of
that study by clicking here.
Finally, our petition drive continues. We can
continue to talk about the credit crises facing small business or
we can take action. Signing our petition should take less than a minute. The more signatures we get, the more power we will have to
prompt
real action. To sign the petition, click on the clipboard below, or click here! |

Education
In August, the
SBAC will be
holding an educational forum on lending. There are many vehicles for
small and medium size businesses to obtain lending that far too few of
us
know about. For instance, SomerCor 504, Inc., a member of the
SBAC, helps small businesses buy real estate through the SBA
504 program at fixed interest rates that are often well below market. To learn more about SomerCor click here.
 This educational
forum will be
open to all SBAC members. We are also in the process of creating
a list of alternative sources of financing, from micro-lenders to
venture capitalist firms. This information will be posted on the SBAC
website shortly. Your SBAC log-in will be required to access these
resources.

SBAC Blog
- When an established businessman with good credit
could not
get a loan, he turned to his franchiser for financing. Facing a $3.4
billion credit shortfall, franchisers are offering new financing
approaches and
incentives. Our blog highlights a New York Times article written by
Kermit
Pattison titled "Tight Credit Is Turning Franchisers Into Lenders." For
those seeking financing for a franchise, this article is a must-read.
- Our Blog also featured another article from the
New York
Times written by "Rob Mandelbaum." In essence, health care plans in
existence at the time the health care legislation was passed do not
have to adhere to the requirements of the new legislation. However,
employers that make "significant" changes to their health insurance
plans may lose the opportunity to keep that plan in place. The impact
of this legislation on small business owners, and their employees, is
uncertain. Supporters of health insurance reform believe
the changes will result in better coverage for employees at an
affordable price for their employers. However, opponents believe the
legislation will raise costs and cause small companies to drop
coverage.
