Global Village Goes to India

Learning ChessOklahoma's chess champion Sean Bocaster taught Global Village daycampers the game of chess, which was first played in India. Campers "visited" India and Nepal. Their exploration included a delicious meal at Gopuram Indian Restaurant, A yoga Class with Diana Rogers and interviewing our neighbor in the Plaza District who hails from Nepal. Campers also learned the famous "Jai Ho" dance from Bollywood, decorated their hands with mehendi, performed "Anket for a Princess" and had a wonderful time in general.

It's not too late to join the fun. Global Village Daycamp runs through August 18th. Sign up for a week, a month, or just a day or two. Call 525.1000 for more info or to reserve a spot.

Maintain Technique for the Summer

Summer fitnessYou worked hard all year long to develop great technique and long, lean lines. You're taking the summer off from dance classes, but don't let summer vacation set you back. Try these tips to keep in shape and on track.

+ Check out Pilates or other workout videos from the library and use them at least 3 times per week

+ Practice tendues and plies while you're brushing your teeth or doing your hair

+ Stay out of that drive-thru! Choose a salad, fresh fruit or other healthy options instead.

+ Try a new sport that you don't have time for during "dance season." Tennis, golf, swimming, softfall or volleyball will keep you fit.

+ Most of all, don't forget to register for Fall classes. The schedule's on the website. See ya at the barre!
Coming Soon to OKC

Alvin Ailey Dance TheatreEGD's own Leila Pourbabaee has been studying in New York City with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. She's learned some exciting new concepts and techniques, and plans to share them with our dancers in a special one-week workshop on the Horton Technique this August.

In the 1920s, '30s and '40s, dancer/choreographer Lester Horton developed a dance technique based on Native American dances, anatomical studies and other movement influences.

Horton's technique is dynamic and dramatic, develops both strength and flexibility, and works with an energy that is constantly in motion. The primary focus is creating length in the spine and hamstrings and developing musicality and performance qualities.

Leila is bringing a Horton Technique Workshop to Everything Goes, August 9-13th. Don't miss it!

WHAT:    Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre / Horton Technique Workshop
WHO:     Leila Pourbabaee
WHEN:    Monday thru Friday, August 9th thru 13th, 6:30 - 8 pm
COST:    $50 for one full week of classes plus a showcase @ the end
OPEN TO experienced dancers aged 12 and up.

Spotlight On ... Miss Danni Kelly

Danni KellyEverything Goes is proud to welcome Ms. Danni Kelly to our faculty. Her Summer Ballet Intensive workshop has been a huge hit with students and parents.

Ballet training provides a solid foundation in dance technique, regardless of what type of dancing you prefer. Elegant lines, strength, speed and flexibility are just a few of the benefits of taking ballet class.

The newest addition to our faculty, Miss Danni Kelly, is an accomplished ballerina, choreographer and dance instructor. She earned both a BA and an MFA in dance from the University of Oklahoma.

Ms. Kelly has performed with Tulsa Ballet Theatre, Oklahoma festival Ballet Company, the Modern Repertory Dance Theatre, Southwest Repertory Theatre Company of Santa Fe, the Tulsa Opera, and the Movable Parts Modern Dance Company. She  currently teaches ballet at Classen S.A.S. She joins our studio to teach beginning through advanced ballet and pointe.

To Pointe or Not To Pointe

Tribute to Michael JacksonYoung ballerinas dream of dancing on their toes and can't wait to get their first pair of pointe shoes. Many students are disappointed when their teachers tell them that they need more training and that they should wait until they're 12 before starting to dance en pointe.

There are good reasons for this policy. Dancing on your toes hurts if you are not properly trained and prepared. The bones and muscles of young feet are not strong enough to handle the stress of dancing en pointe. Most girls are around 12 before their feet and ankles are sufficiently well developed to wear and dance in pointe shoes.

Dancers who go en pointe before their bodies are ready or before they have gained sufficient technique often sustain injuries that plague them for a lifetime. It takes several years of training and study to prepare yourself for dancing on your toes.

Your safety and well being are important to us. That's why our policy at Everything Goes Dance Studio is to wait until a dancer is at least 12 years of age and has had several years of solid ballet training, prior to donning her first pair of pointe shoes.

Dancers who take pointe must also take an additional ballet technique class each week. If you have any questions, please consult Ms. Danni Kelly or Lynna Schneider, our ballet/pointe teachers.
As always, THANK YOU for dancing with us! We are so grateful to our wonderful students and their fantastic families for allowing us the pleasure and privilege of sharing our love for dance.
