The Challenge Identify the symbol and/or common name associated with each of these six numerical values:
- 3.14159...
- 2.71828...
- 8.31446... (Joule/Kelvin/mole)
- 6.02214... x 1023 (/mole)
- 9.81 (meter/second2)
- 2.99792... x 108 (meter/second)
The Correct Answers We were very particular in what answers we accepted as being correct. The symbols are case-sensitive. So, for example, we accepted "g", but not "G" as the correct symbol for value #5. (Lower case "g" and upper case "G" mean two different things.)
Many of you responded to item #4 with "mol" or "mole". Technically, that is not correct. The value for item #4 refers to the number of entities (e.g., atoms, molecules) in a mole of that substance. Hence the "/mole" label in the challenge. Regardless, we were looking for the symbol or common name for this value, not its definition.
