Greetings!

Thank you for participating in the "Mental Gymnastics" challenge in this month's WarehouseTWO e-Newsletter.  Here are the results...
The Challenge
Identify the symbol and/or common name associated with each of these six numerical values:
  1.  3.14159...
  2.  2.71828...
  3.  8.31446... (Joule/Kelvin/mole)
  4.  6.02214... x 1023 (/mole)
  5.  9.81 (meter/second2)
  6.  2.99792... x 108 (meter/second)

The Correct Answers

  valuesymbolcommon name
1. 3.14159...
π (Pi)
2. 2.71828...
e
Euler's Number
3. 8.31446... (Joule/Kelvin/mole)
R
Ideal Gas Constant
4. 6.02214... x 1023 (/mole)
L or NA
Avogadro Constant (formerly "Avogadro's Number")
5. 9.81 (meter/second2)
g
gravitational acceleration (on earth)
6. 2.99792... x 108 (meter/second)
c
speed of light (in a vacuum)

We were very particular in what answers we accepted as being correct.  The symbols are case-sensitive.  So, for example, we accepted "g", but not "G" as the correct symbol for value #5.  (Lower case "g" and upper case "G" mean two different things.)

Many of you responded to item #4 with "mol" or "mole".  Technically, that is not correct.  The value for item #4 refers to the number of entities (e.g., atoms, molecules) in a mole of that substance.  Hence the "/mole" label in the challenge.  Regardless, we were looking for the symbol or common name for this value, not its definition.

The Winners
The winners of this month's "Mental Gymnastics" challenge are:
  • Don Benson, Tribute, Inc. (Hudson, OH USA) (1st correct respondent)
  • Joseph Entwistle, Hydro Air Dees (Harleysville, PA USA) (picked at random from all other correct respondents)
  • Peter Jessee, Valin Corporation (Vancouver, WA USA) (picked at random from all other correct respondents)
  • Gaston Marois, Engrenage Provincial Inc. (Quebec, QC Canada) (picked at random from all other correct respondents)

Thank you again for participating in this month's "Mental Gymnastics" challenge.  Look for another challenge in next month's WarehouseTWO eNewsletter!

Don't forget:  if you have a good "WarehouseTWO success story", we would love to hear about it.
