Play

Bodies and minds adore playing,
Playing means:
No particular outcome expected or needed,
No sense of strict time,
Being outside the box, the clock, the paradigm.

For this adult woman,
Dancing, yoga, moving through space,
Are my play and my body's joy.
Right now, as I write this,
The spirited colt inside me,
Legs gangly and yearning to run,
Is saying, "Get off that computer and onto the mat!"

In a moment, in a moment.
First, I must tell you what still lives in me:
Summer nights, East Coast humidity,
All the kids out on the street,
Roller skates (the kind with keys), climbing trees,
Wandering the woods and feeling safe,
Kickball, tag, hide and seek,
My body's sheer delight at running hard in the almost dark.

Yoga, my body moving through a wide and playful range
Of outside the every day narrow range of allowed
Square and minimal movement allowed in the public domain,
Is my daily bliss.

And here's what the researchers say, in case you
Can't hear your body purring its delight as you play:

Play/yoga/dance/art will:
Inspire you to think differently;
Increase longevity;
Reduce struggle, conflict, worry;
Increase your sense of lightness;
Stimulate imagination, curiosity, creativity;
Soften your heart, reducing hypertension and depression;
Enhance your energy levels;
Provide an opportunity to take risks.
Being play-deprived is like being sleep-deprived

So, now when you finish reading this,

Get up off your chair

Go play: on your mat, in your office, go outside,
Frolic, frisk, romp, caper, mess around.
