Collect
12 Pentecost

Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; those who act accordingly have a good understanding." Psalm 111:10
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

We often confuse wisdom with intellectual acuity.  The "wise owl" of children's literature is often depicted with a monocle and mortar board, signifying academic knowledge.  However, our Sunday readings* reveal a different understanding of wisdom.  The psalmist tells us that we begin to have wisdom when we contemplate in awesome wonder the character of our holy God.

Saint Paul writes to the Christians at Ephesus that they are to live as wise people.  People who understand what is the will of the Lord.

King David's son, Solomon, when he ascends the throne of Israel, asks that the Lord grant him the ability to discern between good and evil, and subsequently word of the wisdom of Solomon spreads throughout the world.  So delighted is God with this request rather than one for wealth or power the he grants these to Solomon also.

The Second Person of the Trinity is known both as the Word (Logos) of God, and the Holy Wisdom of God.  This wisdom comes to us in the person of Jesus.  As Christ dwells in us through the power of his Holy Spirit so we receive this wisdom; the ability to discern between good and evil.  However, it is our choice as to how we act on that wisdom.

May we be careful how we live, acting wisely and not foolishly, and in so doing we will be transformed into the likeness of the One who is Holy Wisdom.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

I am the Good Shepherd.  The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep ... I am the Good Shepherd.  I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
