6 Pentecost

O God, you have taught us to keep all your commandments by loving you and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection"
Collect, Proper 9, BCP
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Devotion to God requires not just some of our heart, but our whole heart.  However, as both the Gospel and Epistle readings on Sunday reveal there can be hindrances to this kind of devotion: a refusal to trust in the evidence of God's power and might, and pride and boasting in our own abilities.  Thankfully both readings also reveal how such hindrances can be overcome.

In the northern part of Galilee, around Capernaum, Jesus has healed a paralytic, a leper, a man with a withered hand, a woman with an issue of blood, raised a little girl who had died, healed the demon-possessed Legion, calmed a storm with a word, and healed untold others.  But, when he returns home to Nazareth just twenty miles away, where he teaches with such wisdom in the synagogue, and where news has reached of his deeds of power, they take offense at him, and he can do no deed of power there.  "A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown" - familiarity has bred contempt.

Have we at times become over-familiar with this Jesus?  Have we relegated him to mere text on a page, rather than a, powerful, challenging, and living presence?  We have seen his deeds of power but have we attributed them to him or to natural causes or even our own abilities? We have heard his teaching, but have we allowed his challenges to us to lead transformed lives become muted?

In his second letter to the Corinthians Paul attacks the spiritual pride and boasting of the "super apostles" who have taken the eyes of the Corinthian Christians off Jesus and onto themselves.

Self-sufficiency and pride - two great hindrances to our whole-hearted devotion to God.

Jesus' antidote when he sends out his disciples to continue his ministry?  You're only allowed to take the bare essentials: sandals, tunic, and staff - nothing else - except His authority to heal, and many are healed because of Jesus' power, not their own.

Paul knew, and he told the Corinthians so, that when he was the most weak then God's power was the most strong, and he had resolved therefore, to boast in his weakness because "when I am weak, then I am strong."

When all our false notions of self-sufficiency are stripped away, when He is all we have left, then Jesus' presence and power leap once again into sharp relief and we become devoted, once again, with our whole heart.

May we ask the Holy Spirit to fan into flame our whole-hearted devotion to Him and we will experience His power made perfect through our weakness.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

PRAYER FOR GENERAL CONVENTION

Almighty and everliving God, source of all wisdom and understanding, be present with those who take counsel in Indianapolis at our General Convention for the renewal and mission of your Church. Teach us in all things to seek first your honor and glory. Guide us to perceive what is right, and grant us both the courage to pursue it and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We pray also for protection, grace, and safe travel for Bishop Greg and all the deputies from the Diocese of Central Florida, that God may powerfully use their witness.
