Collect
5 Pentecost

Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"You know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich." 2 Corinthians 8:10
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Generosity is at the heart of the Gospel - it is called grace. "Generosity is the habit of giving freely without expecting anything in return."  We tend to associate the word "generous" with financial giving, but generosity extends to all aspects of our lives.

In this Sunday's Old Testament reading we encounter David's generosity of spirit - "a man after God's own heart."  He has just learnt that his enemy King Saul, who has long sought to kill David, has been killed with his sons as they battled the Philistines.  Instead of dancing for joy at the death of his enemy, he mourns, and calls all of Israel to mourn as well, and in doing so heaps honor on the House of Saul.

In the Gospel reading we see Jesus' generosity of presence and compassion.  In the midst of crowds vying for his attention he remains calm giving his full attention to each person in need.  And Paul reminds the Corinthians of Jesus' greatest act of generosity: his death on the cross for our salvation.

Each one of us is called to have a generosity of spirit in all areas of our lives.  The extent to which we are able to be generous with all of who we are will be commensurate with our trust in God's provision.

May we remember where the Lord has already provided for us: in forgiveness of our sins, in healing, in financial provision, and may we trust in his ongoing provision, and from that place of security reach out with the same generosity of spirit.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+
