Almighty and everlasting O God, from whom all good proceeds: Grant that by your inspiration we may think those things that are right, and by your merciful guiding may do them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"We do not lose heart ... For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure" 2 Corinthians 4:16-17
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

In his second letter to the Corinthians Paul reflects deeply on his own suffering, his own afflictions, but he does so in the light of Christ's suffering.  At the beginning of the letter he writes: "We do not want you to be ignorant brothers of the affliction we experienced in Asia.  For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired on life itself." 2 Cor 1:8-9.

Paul had come the end of his rope, he had no more strength in himself, he had reached that point where hope seemed almost lost.  But not completely lost, for immediately after writing that he was "utterly burdened beyond our strength" Paul continued "But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead."

God's power is never more accessible to us than when we have reached the end of our own resources: "My [God's] power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Cor 12:9.  The things that would take away our hope are what God can use to accomplish his work, to transform us: "We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.  We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed, perplexed, but not driven to despair, persecuted, but not forsaken, struck down, but not destroyed." God is in the business of turning weakness into strength, his strength.  If we question that we need only look at the cross, that place where it seemed the most hopeless, but where apparent defeat was turned into the greatest victory, through the power of the one who raises the dead.

Therefore, we do not lose hope, we do not lose heart, we can trust that although sometimes it might seem like we are living in Good Friday, Sunday and the Resurrection life is coming - he has already shown us that it is so.  And we can affirm with Paul "He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us.  On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again."

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Spaghetti Lunch and Basket Auction FUNdraiser!
SO MUCH FUN!

Our fantastic Master of Ceremonies, Wayne, auctioned off a bounty of baskets with his inimicable wit - to the tune of approximately $2600!!! (We haven't yet totaled up the food sales!)
Thanks so much to all who were so creative with their "baskets" and to all who bid.  Thanks also to the cooking crew - wonderful!  Thanks also for all the birthday wishes!  (I understand the baker at Costco is now refusing any more Union Jack cake requests :-)

The Parables of Jesus in Luke
ParablesThroughout the summer, during our Adult Christian Formation hour, we will continue to look at the parables of Jesus through Middle Eastern eyes by means of Kenneth Bailey's excellent DVD series.  Kenneth Bailey is a world-renowned Bible scholar who brings a depth of experience to the interpretation of the parables through his time spent living in the Middle East.

Happy 4thYes, it's a bit early - but we wanted you to mark your calendars for a 4th of July party at church after the 10:30 am service on July 1st.  Hot Dogs, chips, coleslaw, watermelon, etc.  Look in next Sunday's bulletin for a little survey of all of our connections to different places in North American (that includes Canada since it is Canada Day!)  Father Lee has flags from all the states (and a couple from Canada) so we'll decorate the Parish Hall with flags from all the places we're either from or have visited, or have family ....
