Collect
7 Easter

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Last Thursday we entered the 10 day season of Ascensiontide, that period of preparation between the Lord's Ascension to the promised coming of the Holy Spirit in power on the Day of Pentecost.

Although it has been said that Pentecost is the birthday of the Church this is not strictly correct as the Church is present in Christ during his earthly Incarnation.  For the Church is the Body of Christ, and as members of that one Body, we have been commissioned to carry on the mission that he started: "to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ" (Catechism of the Book of Common Prayer, page 854)

In the words of author Philip Yancey "all along [Jesus] had planned to depart in order to carry on his work in other bodies.  Their (the disciples') bodies.  Our bodies.  The new body of Christ." (The Jesus I Never Knew)  Admittedly, we have not always done a very good job: nasty words are spoken to others or about others, unforgiveness is sometimes held onto as a point of pride, we set up such high purity boundaries that we do not provide a space for people to be welcomed in and transformed, or we confuse love and toleration and do not hold fast to the transforming love of Christ that desires our wholeness, not our continued sinfulness.  But there are those who have shone brightly with the light of Christ.  We think of Mother Theresa, William Wilberforce, Dorothy Day, amongst others, many of whose names have not made it into the history books.

In all our frailty, we are those who Christ has chosen to carry on his mission: "You did not choose me, but I chose you" (John 15:16)  And he does not leave us on our own to do the work he has given us to do.  On the night before he was betrayed, and crucified he prayed for his disciples and for us: for our protection and unity, for his joy to be ours, not to be removed from the world but to be protected from the ruler of the world, and for our sanctification.  He continues to intercede for us - constantly.  And we too are to be constant in prayer.  For as the Book of Common Prayer states "the Church pursues its mission as it prays and worships, proclaims the Gospel, and promotes justice, peace, and love."

The early Church did nothing without prayer.  In the time between our Lord's Ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit the disciples were constant in prayer: for God's power, for God's presence, and that they would remain centered in God's purpose.

May we likewise remain constant in prayer that we may fulfill His mission where he has planted us.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Risen Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

Judith Warren-Brown, who has been with us for the last several months, will be ordained to the diaconate on May 26 at 11:00 am in the Cathedral Church of St Luke.

Judith will begin her ministry with us as a deacon on the Day of Pentecost, Sunday, May 27th.

I pray you will join Judith in this celebration and welcome her into her new ministry in our midst.

Fellowship Under the Word Home Groups

Start the first week of June

The group in Sue Burley's house, Maitland, will begin meeting on Thursday, June 7 and will meet from 7:00-8:30 pm.  Paulette Webster will be the facilitator.  This is a women's group.

The group in Roy and Bev Lassiter's house, Winter Park, will begin meeting on Wednesday, June 6, and will meet from 6:30-8:00 pm.  Gavin Lee will facilitate the discussion.  This is a mixed group (men, women, single, married)

The groups will be following along with a wonderfully engaging study on Paul's Letter to the Romans designed for "everyone" by NT Wright.  This is a very "user-friendly" study - no prior Bible study experience needed.  These home groups are a great way to deepen our fellowship with each other, to pray for each other, and to have an easy conversation with the Apostle Paul.

Although not required, participants might find it helpful to purchase the study guide (see photo above), at a cost of $10 through the Church.  If you are interested in participating in a group, and/or would like to purchase a study guide, please contact Terri Sims in the church office or by email her here.

"The 5 Wishes"

Sunday, June 10th 9:15 - 10:15 am in Roberta's Hall sponsored by the Pastoral Care Commission

Donna Gray, Community Education Coordinator with Hospice of the Comforter, will give a presentation on The Five Wishes booklet. This is a  document that gives one a way to control something very important. "It is the first living will that talks about your personal, emotional and spiritual needs, as well as medical wishes. It gives one the opportunity to talk with family, friends, and doctor about how you want to be treated, if you became seriously ill. They will not have to guess what you want and/or make hard choices without knowing your wishes."

This is a link to the document in .pdf format.  Donna will explain the importance of completing this document now, no matter what our age or state of health, and she will explain how to complete the booklet.  She will also be available to answer any questions you might have.
