6 Easter

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God."
Acts 10:45-46
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Peter's sermon to all the Gentiles gathered in the centurion Cornelius' house begins with a very new revelation to Peter: "Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him."  This message of salvation in Jesus Christ that he shares with his Gentile audience is not just for his own people, the Jews, it is for them as well!  "Everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins."  And in that moment as hope grows in the Gentile heart the Holy Spirit is poured out on them, and this anointing is manifested, as it was with disciples, by unrestrained worship of God.

We received this same anointing of the Holy Spirit at our baptism: "you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in baptism, and marked as Christ's own forever."  At that time we became the temple of God the Holy Spirit, and he gave us his gifts.  Some have received the gift of tongues, others the gift of mercy, still others the gift of hospitality, and others the gift of leadership, there are many gifts, and they are given for one purpose: the building up of the Body of Christ, the Church.

Even if you don't know what your gift is the chances are that you are already walking in your giftedness.  Is there something that you find you love to do, something that blesses you so much when you do it?  Something that perhaps for someone else might seem a duty or a burden, but for you it is just joy?  It might be praying for others.  It might be a behind the scenes ministry of getting things ready for others.  It might be encouraging others.  It might be teaching God's truths.  Whatever it is we are to make sure that we are doing it in the power of the Holy Spirit.  When we try and run on our own battery power we eventually run out of energy, but when we are plugged into the life force of the Holy Spirit within us, who first bestowed the gift on us, we can run without tiring.

May we pray for our hearts to be set on fire, to blaze with the power of the Holy Spirit as did those first Gentile converts.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Risen Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

Fellowship Under the Word Home Groups

Roy and Bev Lassiter will be hosting a group in their home and Gavin Lee will facilitate the discussion.  Sue Burley will also host a group in her home and Sharon Graham will facilitate the discussion.  The groups will be following along with a wonderfully engaging study on Paul's Letter to the Romans designed for "everyone" by NT Wright.  This is a very "user-friendly" study - no prior Bible study experience needed.  These home groups are great way to deepen our fellowship with each other, to pray for each other, and to have an easy conversation with the Apostle Paul.   If you are interested in participating in a group please contact Terri Sims in the church office or by email her here
