| Collect 5 Easter
| | Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me." John 15:4
|
Dearly Beloved in Christ,
"Abide" is a gentle word, a restful word. No striving here, no work, no trying, no forcing - just remaining. "Abide in me" says our Lord, just rest back into me, the same way as I am resting within you.
A graft, whether it is human tissue or plant tissue, requires that the grafted on tissue receive the life force from the site to which the graft is attached. In the case of human tissue, blood needs to flow freely into the grafted tissue, the graft just needs to abide, to allow the blood to flow. In the image of the vine, we are the grafted in branch to the rootstock of Jesus. We simply need to abide to let his life flow into us, and he then also abides in us.
The more we rest in him, the more we simply abide, the stronger the connection grows, and the stronger our branch becomes. Fruit appears because we allow Jesus' life force to bud, flower, and ultimately bear fruit - his fruit - the fruit that reflects the rootstock from which it draws its nourishment: "Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing." If we squeeze out his life force by striving in our own strength we will wither on his vine and become useless.
As gardeners know well, even trees that are bearing fruit will need to be pruned in order to bear more fruit. There will be seasons when we will need to go through a pruning. During those times we become even more aware that we need Jesus' life force, we need his Spirit, to sustain us, and to make us grow. So deep does this abiding become, so deeply embedded within us are his words, that our prayers, our requests to the Father, come from His heart: "If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples."
May we learn to abide so that we bear much fruit to the glory of the Father.
In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Risen Lord, Rev'd Sarah+ |

Fellowship Under the Word Home Groups
Roy and Bev Lassiter will be hosting a group in their home and Gavin Lee will facilitate the discussion. Sue Burley will also host a group in her home and Sharon Graham will facilitate the discussion. The groups will be following along with a wonderfully engaging study on Paul's Letter to the Romans designed for "everyone" by NT Wright. This is a very "user-friendly" study - no prior Bible study experience needed. These home groups are great way to deepen our fellowship with each other, to pray for each other, and to have an easy conversation with the Apostle Paul. If you are interested in participating in a group please contact Terri Sims in the church office or by email her here
