Fellowship Under the Word

Home Groups

We have two (and possibly three) host homes and discussion facilitators and a wonderfully engaging study on Romans designed for "everyone" by NT Wright.  This is a very "user-friendly" study - no prior Bible study experience needed.  A great way to deepen our fellowship with each other, to pray for each other, and to have an easy conversation with the Apostle Paul.  More information will be forthcoming on dates and locations.

Spaghetti Lunch and Basket Auction Fundraiser

Sunday, June 10

after the 10:30 service.  Do you have a novel idea for a basket for our auction?  Join the fun donate and bid!  We have had kid's party baskets, pampering baskets, sailing trip baskets, cooking baskets, quilting baskets ... do you have a favorite pastime you could make into a basket?

Jerusalem Marketplace

A new kind of VBS

Saturday July 21 & Saturday July 28

This year we have set aside two Saturdays for our Jerusalem Marketplace VBS.  Instead of the normal week-long VBS  we will extend the Jerusalem Marketplace over two Saturdays giving working parents the opportunity to enjoy a journey back in time to 1st century Palestine with their children.

Mark the dates and look for more information in the next few weeks

"This is his commandment: that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another."" 1 John 3:23
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

The repeating refrain in the Scriptures is that of love: God's love for us and the requirement that we should love each other.  In John's first epistle there is a very stark contrast drawn between those who love and those who don't: those who don't love their brother are children of the devil (1 John 3:10); "whoever does not love abides in death .. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer."  "We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers." (1 John 3:14)

Last year, at our vestry retreat, we reflected upon our DNA.  What was the reason for which God planted Church of the Good Shepherd all those years ago?  His original design must still hold true for us all these years later - we were of one mind - Church of the Good Shepherd exists to reveal Christ's love.  In the words of that wonderful hymn: "The King of Love my Shepherd is."  We are called by his name, and believing in his name we are to be his people who reveal his love.

What are some of the characteristics of that love?  First of all it is sacrificial.  It is a love that costs the giver, a love not given out of our excess but out of our poverty: "We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us - and we ought to lay down our lives for one another." (1 John 3:16)  Secondly, it is a love that is not of human origin: "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God" (1 John 4:7) "In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us ... beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another." (1 John 4:10-11).  We can only love to the extent that we first drink from the wellspring of God's great love for us.  Thirdly, it is the Holy Spirit within us whose work it is to reveal Christ's love through us: "he has given us his Spirit ... whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God ... by this is love perfected in us." (1 John 4:13-17)

We are to love not just in "word or speech" says John, "but in truth and action."  In our individual lives and in our common life, this must be the measure:  Are we revealing Christ's love? Every ministry in the life of the church must be measured against this plumbline, for "this is his commandment: that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he commanded us."  A sacrificial love, drawing deeply from the wellspring of the Father's love, poured forth through the working of the Holy Spirit as that love is perfected in us, and all in the name of the only One who brings wholeness, the King of Love, the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Risen Lord,
