| Collect 3 Easter
| | O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are." 1 John 3:1 (NIV)
|
Dearly Beloved in Christ,
You are your Father's beloved child - this is your true identity. You might have difficulty believing this because your human father was flawed. Perhaps he was distant or physically or verbally abusive, or perhaps you were abandoned by him. But even "good" human fathers fall short of the love of our true Father. For he lavishes his love on us. His love is not dependent on what we look like, or on our accomplishments. There is nothing we can do to make him love us more, and nothing that we have done or can do to make him love us less. He loves us quite simply because through Christ he has made us his children upon whom he delights to pour out his love.
If we quit our striving and busyness for a while we will hear his gentle and persistent voice: "my beloved child I love you!" Our lives matter to him. We are his. He cares for us. He lavishes his love on us. There is nothing that provides us greater security than this - he has adopted us - we are his beloved children. "We are God's children now," says John, and then continues "what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he (Christ) is revealed, we will be like him." Is this the desire of our heart - to bear the family resemblance?
He will bring about that transformation - if we cooperate. Will we be external Christians only, or will we allow him to change us from the inside out? Authentic Christianity takes courage - it requires that we face up to the messes we have made and ask him to clean them up. In the words of a poem known to many teachers:
He came to my desk with quivering lips, The lesson was done. Dear Teacher, "I want a new sheet," he said, "I spoiled this one." I took the old sheet, stained and blotted and gave him a new one, all unspotted, And into his sad eyes smiled, "Do better now my child." I came to God with a quivering soul, The old life was done. Dear Father, "Have you a new life for me? I spoiled this one." He took the old life, stained and blotted, And gave me a new one, all unspotted, And into my sad heart smiled, "Do better now my child."
It is never too late to start to grow into the fullness of who we are as beloved children of God. May we have the courage to start today, and to live freely and joyfully as who we truly are - beloved sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father.
