2 Easter

Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ's Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established a new covenant of reconciliation" Collect for Easter 2 BCP

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

The Paschal mystery is the Easter mystery - the passion, death, and resurrection of our Lord.  The word "Paschal" comes from the Greek "pascha" which derives from the Hebrew "pesah" meaning "to pass over." The Hebrew Passover remembers when the Angel of Death passed over the houses of the Hebrews in Egypt that had been daubed with the blood of lambs - the event that brought the Jews release from slavery.

The Paschal mystery is the Passover of the Lord, in which the Lord passed over from death to life.  This is the event that establishes the "new covenant of reconciliation."  Reconciliation with our holy, holy, holy God in whom no darkness dwells, in whose presence the darkness of sin is consumed.  For holiness and sin cannot coexist, like fire and paper, the very nature of the one is to consume the other.  But in this mystery, we who are sin-riddled, who would be consumed in the holy presence of God, are given the gift of reconciliation with God.

Like any gift we are free to receive it or reject it.  To receive it fully we need to extend two hands: i) the hand of faith, trusting in the sinless Paschal lamb on whom all our sins were laid, an "atoning sacrifice" for us, and ii) the hand of confession and repentance.  For "if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves ... if we say that we have not sinned we make him a liar ... if we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie."

For this sweet fellowship with God, this new covenant of reconciliation, this perfect Shalom with God we must reach out in faith and repentance to receive this Paschal gift, and in it we find none other than the Lord himself.

May we trust completely and repent fully, and receive the great peace of reconciliation of which we also are to be ambassadors.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our risen Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+
