Collect
Easter

Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Empty Tomb
"Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back - it was very large."
Mark 16:4
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

The empty tomb demands a decision from us.  Why is the tomb empty?  What will we do with the answer?

The fact of the empty tomb elicited a variety of responses from the women who were the first to arrive to find the stone rolled back and the sepulchre devoid of a body: fear, amazement, alarm, astonishment, perplexity, fright, and sorrow.  All of which turn to pure joy and worship when they encounter the risen Lord.  The men likewise remain in fear and doubt, the women's witness considered no more than an idle tale, until they too encounter the risen Lord.

A terrified, bewildered, rudderless group of men and women are transformed into a band of people of such unquenchable joy and courage that many would go to their deaths rather than deny the fact of the resurrection of their Lord and Savior - and ours.

The tomb is empty - it requires a reorienting of reality - what will our response be? For ...
If the Lord is risen we must trust all that he has said
If the Lord is risen we must surrender all we are to him and obey him as our Lord
If the Lord is risen darkness and evil will not prevail
If the Lord is risen despair will be turned to joy
If the Lord is risen we have received complete and total forgiveness of our sins
If the Lord is risen his kingdom will prevail
If the Lord is risen the same power that raised him from the dead is unleashed in his Church
If the Lord is risen then we are not alone for he is with us
If the Lord is risen we are profoundly loved
If the Lord is risen he has swallowed up death

In the words of John Chrysostom:
Hell took a body, and discovered God
It took earth, and encountered Heaven.
It took what it saw, and was overcome by what it did not see
O death, where is thy sting?
O Hades, where is thy victory?

Christ IS risen, and you, o death are annihilated!
Christ IS risen, and the evil ones are cast down!
Christ IS risen, and the angels rejoice!
Christ IS risen, and life is liberated!
Christ IS risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead!

Alleluia! Christ IS risen!  the Lord IS risen indeed! Alleluia!

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our risen Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+
