| Collect 5 Lent
| | Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

"Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit." John 12:24
|
Dearly Beloved in Christ,
Yet again Jesus prepares his disciples for what he knows, but they cannot yet grasp: he must die. The new covenant promised through Jeremiah (31:31) is made possible only through his shed blood. A new covenant whereby God's law is written on hearts, not on stone tablets. Through his death the seed of God's Spirit is sown in the hearts of believers. Jesus' death is the seed that bears much fruit.
We have seen the truth of this metaphor around the campus since the workday. Seeds have been planted, and have already started to sprout. But before the seed could be planted a work of preparation needed to be done: vines that were choking off plants needed to be pulled out, dead branches cut off, the hard-packed soil tilled so that new shoots could push through. And then after the planting sunshine and water.
This is our spiritual journey during Lent. There is a work of preparation that needs to be done. We must allow the Lord, who has written his law on our hearts, to reveal to us that which is contrary to his law, that which is sin in our life, that which is a vine choking the life out of us, and we must turn and ask his forgiveness.
The Lord will do the rest of the gardening for us: he will remove the vines, he will cut off the dead branches and burn them in the fire, he will till the soil. For the foundation of the New Covenant in Christ's blood is forgiveness of sins. He promises not only forgiveness of sins, but their complete eradication from memory (Jeremiah 31:34b). And we will see the seed of the Spirit grow.
We will see new shoots bursting forth, shoots that grow by exposure to the light of his living Word, and by being watered by the Lord himself in the sacrament of his body and blood.
May we do the work of preparation so that the new life, that we see springing forth around the campus, springs forth also in our spiritual lives.
In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord, Rev'd Sarah+ |

EASTER FLOWERS AND MAUNDY THURSDAY ALL NIGHT WATCH If you would like to remember or give thanks for a loved one this Easter please fill out an Easter Flower form or envelope with the name(s) of your loved-ones, and include your name(s). These will be included in a special bulletin insert in the Easter bulletins.
There is a sign up for the Maundy Thursday All Night Watch - this is our response to the Lord's question: "Will you wait with me one hour?" The All Night Watch takes place in the Chapel this year - it begins after the end of the Maundy Thursday service and continues until the Reserved Sacrament is brought back into the Church for the noonday service on Good Friday.
