| Collect 3 Lent
| | Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life." John 3:16
|
Dearly Beloved in Christ,
Perhaps one of the most well-known verses in the Bible, if not before Tim Tebow painted the chapter and verse references onto his cheeks then certainly afterwards! There are, however, two ways of reading this well-known verse: "God so (very much) loved the world ..." or God so (in this way) loved the world ..." The former indicates the extent to which God loved the world, and the latter the manner in which he showed that love. Perhaps in God's perfect economy both meanings are intended.
The God who created mankind in love continues to hold in absolute love his creation, and the only way to show the perfection of that love was for God the Son to become man himself, to the end that death would not have the last word, for all who believe in him inherit eternal life.
Here the amazing grace of God is fully revealed: unmerited love lavishly bestowed - unmerited redemption fully given, appropriated through faith. In the words of Saint Paul "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God." Ephesians 2:8
May we always be ready to proclaim, with John Newton, repentant slave trader and later Anglican clergyman: "Amazing grace! how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me, I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see."
In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord, Rev'd Sarah+ |
