Collect
2 Lent

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." Mark 8:34
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

We would like to think that our paths would always be straight - no steep mountains to climb, no dark valleys to pass through - that it would be smooth walking - no rocks to turn our ankles on or brambles to scratch our legs.

Peter wanted just such a straight path.  When the Lord told him that they were headed for Jerusalem where he would be handed over to die Peter rebuked him!  Peter had other ideas - human ideas - not divine ones "you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man" Jesus told him.

How often would we write a human script rather than follow a divine one "your thoughts are not my thoughts, nor your ways my ways" says the Lord through his prophet Isaiah.  Our human script doesn't naturally lead us to deny ourselves, to take up our cross, and to follow someone into the unknown.  But that is precisely what we are called to do as followers of Christ, because paradoxically when we give up our life to Christ we do not lose it - we gain it.  We can follow him into the unknown because he knows the way - he knows the way to the top of the steepest mountain, and the path through the darkest valley.  He heals our turned ankles and puts salve on our scratched up legs.  We can trust him because he has shown himself to be trustworthy - he is a promise-keeping God.  Will we do as the master requires?

Perhaps this covenant prayer of John Wesley could be ours:
"I am no longer my own but Thine, put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt, put me to doing, put me to suffering, let me be employed for thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee; let me be full, let me be empty; let me have all things, let me have nothing; I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal."

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

Sunday Morning Lenten Series for Adults
February 26 - April 1 / 9:30am - 10:15am
What are the different Bible translations?  Which is the best one for you?  What are some basic study tools?  How do we use the different study tools?  Should we approach the study of the New Testament letters differently than we approach the study of the Psalms, or the Old Testament historical narratives?  How do we both study the Bible and read it devotionally?
We will explore these and any other questions you might have during the Sunday morning Adult Christian Formation time during Lent

Perhaps you cannot be a regular member of our choir because of scheduling conflicts, but perhaps you could help raise our voices on Easter morning!  A much smaller commitment of time is required and we would so appreciate the addition of your voice.  Will you share your gift? (even if you don't think you have one- if others have told you you have a nice voice give it a try!)
