| Collect 1 Lent
| | Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

""Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God." 1 Peter 3:18
|
Dearly Beloved in Christ,
The geographical center of London is Charing Cross, the original cross at Charing Cross was replaced centuries ago with a statue of King Charles on his horse. But atop Charing Cross Station is a spire with a cross on the top - a point of reference to many. A story is told of a little girl who gets lost in London, and through sobs tells the kind policeman trying to help her that she knows neither her phone number nor her address. Her face finally brightens when the policeman asks her what she does know: "I know the Cross" she tells him, "Show me the Cross and I can find my way home."
Just a few days ago, on Ash Wednesday, we were reminded that we are "but dust and to dust" we shall return. Always a sobering start to this season of Lent - a stunning reminder both visually and verbally of our mortality. It is as it should be. We ignore the reality of our eventual death at our peril. These mortal bodies get old, they decay, and eventually they just plain wear out. That wasn't their original design, but the effects of sin, and living in a fallen world take their toll, like acid on metal.
While we live, we must live fully to the Lord, but we must also prepare to die. Will we die "well?" Will we be ready to let go of this temporary existence in the sure knowledge of an everlasting one? Or do we sometimes lose our orientation? Do we get lost? If so, like the lost little girl, we will always be able to find our way home when we keep our eyes on the cross.
The cross is the single sign that both leads us, and is the way back to our true home - back home to God. St Peter, writing to encourage Christians under daily threat of death because of their faith put it this way: "Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God." The instrument that brought death to Christ brings life to us because he died there for us.
May we keep in mind during these 40 days of Lent that Jesus set his face to Jerusalem, set his face to the cross, to die there so that when we die we live. Let us keep our eyes on the cross, because when we see the cross the way home is sure.
In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord, Rev'd Sarah+ |

Bible Study Basics Sunday Morning Lenten Series for Adults February 26 - April 1 / 9:30am - 10:15am What are the different Bible translations? Which is the best one for you? What are some basic study tools? How do we use the different study tools? Should we approach the study of the New Testament letters differently than we approach the study of the Psalms, or the Old Testament historical narratives? How do we both study the Bible and read it devotionally? We will explore these and any other questions you might have during the Sunday morning Adult Christian Formation time during Lent
