Collect
 6 Epiphany

O God, the strength of all who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because in our weakness we can do nothing good without you, give us the help of your grace, that in keeping your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"If the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it?  How much more, when all he said to you was, 'Wash, and be clean'?" 2 Kings 5:13.  "A leper came to Jesus begging him, and kneeling he said to him, 'If you choose, you can make me clean.'" Mark 1:40
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Two very different men, suffering from the same disease of leprosy, with more than a few hundred years separating them.  Naaman, the proud and arrogant Syrian warrior seeking healing, arrives outside the door of the Prophet Elisha with great pomp and wealth. (2 Kings 5:1-14).  The first century Palestinian Jewish leper, with torn clothes, disheveled appearance, and ringing his bell proclaiming himself "unclean," approaches Jesus with great courage, faith, and humility. (Mark 1:40-45)

Naaman comes with wealth to bargain for his healing, he expects a great show to be made, but his pride is bruised and but for the wise words of his servant he would have walked away from God's healing because of it.  How often are we like Naaman seeking to bargain with God - "Lord if I do this, will you grant me that?"  Does our pride sometimes get in our way, refusing to accede to God's simple demands, believing that we know better?  Do we sometimes want something that looks closer to magic, to human manipulation, than to God's quiet working in power?  The first century leper comes in great humility, seeking no manipulation, with a simple faith that knows that grace is quite simply a free gift "If you choose, you can make me clean."  And the Lord does - both choose and make clean.

God's way of healing Naaman brings healing not only to his leprosy, but also to his pride, and he receives the greatest healing of all through finding faith in the One true God.

God's way of healing cannot be reduced to a formula, sometimes it is through touch, sometimes with a word, sometimes he uses something in nature, sometimes something made by man, sometimes it is the faith of the one in need of healing, sometimes the faith of others - Always and only it is His power at work through all these things - it is always gift.  And the greatest gift of healing he delights to give is healing from the power and penalty of sin through the blood of the cross.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+
