Revealing Christ's Love

"Everyone is searching for you." Mark 1:37
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

In Mark's Gospel Jesus begins his ministry in Galilee with the proclamation: "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news."  He immediately calls the fishermen, Simon Peter, his brother Andrew and the brothers James and John and they all go to Capernaum.  On the sabbath (Friday evening after sunset to Saturday as the sun goes down) they go to synagogue where the first person to recognize Jesus for who he is is an "unclean spirit" whom he then casts out. The Holy One of God is recognized first in the spiritual realm - long before there is any recognition in the physical realm.  Upon returning from the synagogue, and finding Peter's mother-in-law ill with a fever, he immediately goes to her, takes her by her hand, helps her up, and in that gesture alone she is healed.

The kingdom of God is near because the reign of God is fully present in the person of Jesus.  The rule of God: justice, mercy, peace, healing, love, are integrally who he is and flow from him.  And in Capernaum word has spread from the synagogue and at sundown on Saturday Simon Peter's house is mobbed by the entire town.  It is after dark when Jesus starts to enact the reign of God among the great number of sick and demon possessed.  If he had any sleep at all that night it must have been very little because it was still very dark when he went out by himself to be with his Father in prayer.  For Jesus, restoration came by being with his Father, as did direction.

After a frantic search Peter finds Jesus and confronts him with what sounds like a rather frustrated "everyone is searching for you."  To which Jesus replies: "Let us go to the neighboring towns, so I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came to do ... and he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message ... and casting out demons."

The inbreaking kingdom of God is accompanied by the message "repent and believe."  Repentance and belief are prerequisites  to the coming of God's rule in power.

Were the people searching for Jesus for what he could do for them, or were they searching for him to follow this One who preaches and requires repentance and belief as integral parts of the reign of God and of the healing he imparts?

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+
