"Take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block"
1 Corinthians 8:9
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Saint Paul's relationship with the church in Corinth was perhaps his most contentious.  It was a Christian community that he had founded during his second missionary journey, probably around 50-52 AD, and one that had evidently received an abundance of the gifts of the Holy Spirit: speaking in tongues, prophecy, knowledge, teaching, etc. But the jostling for power and authority, prevalent in the Corinthian society at large through boasting of wealth, accomplishments, and connections seems to have made its way into the Christian community.  In 1 Corinthians 5:6 he tells them quite plainly "your boasting is not good!"  And in 10:25 he tells them "Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor ... do all to the glory of God."  Christ should be their model.

The Christ whose teaching and deeds amazed the people who would exclaim "A new teaching - with authority!"  So much so that "his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region."  Here was someone who had reason to boast in his abilities and yet who would say "Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing."  (John 5:19) Jesus acknowledges that he receives his authority from the Father, he is a conduit for the working of the Father's power.  For he perfectly knows the Father, he spends dedicated time in conversation with the Father, listening to the Father's will, and he alone is without sin - a completely clean conduit for the Father's power to be at work.

And yet he tells us this: "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.  He will do even greater things than these because I am going to the Father." (John 14:12)  How can this be?  Perhaps if we follow the model of the Master: spend time getting to know the Father through his Word, developing the discipline of spending dedicated time with the Lord, listening to his voice, and by keeping our spiritual conduit clean through a daily examen, repentance and seeking the Lord's forgiveness.

We have also been given spiritual gifts, not that we may boast but that we may bear fruit to the glory of God.  So that through us the promise will be fulfilled "anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.  He will do even greater things than these ..."  There are still demons to be overcome, still illnesses to be healed, still his words to be taught - we are to be the conduit of his power - will we let go of seeking after our own good and allow his power to work through us to his glory?

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+
